Favorites/Predictions for Piglet 2013?   Go to last post Go to last unread

I know a little late here, but any winner predictions?

Some of my favorites have already been eliminated (ahem Jerusalem). Although I do own two other Andrea Nguyen cookbooks - so it was a tough bracket for me given I like both authors.

Although I don't own it, Roots looks like a great book and is also gone. I'm thinking Japanese Farm food might make it to the finals...but just a guess as I don't own that one.

I do own Japanese Farm Food and it is a gorgeous book (full discosure, the author Nancy is a friend).  I think it could go all the way though the judging is so idiosyncratic that it is hard to predict who will win each round.  I was also disappointed that Roots was knocked out as its a wonderful book (and the author used EYB a lot for her research).  But each of the contenders left in have produced really good cookbooks so it's going to be exciting to watch the results (and read the reviews).  We are linking to all the reviews from our Reviews tabs for the books.

Japanese Farm Food is the one cookbook that I really want to own.  So I also want it to win.  Of course I love smitten kitchen, but perhaps more as a blog than a cookbook.  And bouchon bakery - it scares me!

I generally do not read food52, but this piglet thing is a very fun feature.

Well there goes Japanese Farm food.

A Bouchon Bakery vs Girl and Her Pig would be an interesting finale.

It's a little late to join this discussion, but I can't say I'm too surpirsed about the remaining three books that are left. I am very interested to see which one makes it through between Smitten Kitchen and Bouchon Bakery -- either one would make an interesting match-up against A Girl and Her Pig. But if I were to guess, I think A Girl and Her Pig will be the overall winner -- especially with Fergus Henderson as the judge of the final round. But as we've seen before, you just never know how the judgement will go!

Appreciate the reminder to go check in on the Piglet... and oh, the carnage.

But there's useful information, too. Kurt Andersen alerts that the cover image of A Girl and Her Pig is non-removable, and that the text is littered with more photos of the author.  Intrusive author images cross any cookbook off my list, however desirable it might be otherwise.

Though I don't want to have its company in my kitchen, that cover image of April Bloomfield is a vivid, award-worthy poster of its moment.  It has a lot in common with the cover of San Francisco cheesemonger Gordon Edgar's Life on the Wedge (very enjoyable book, recommended).

Okay, interesting final round. Although Fergus Henderson's 'review' was more of a discussion of what makes a good cookbook not a detailed review of these two books.

I wish the actual final voters discussed more what they made from the books/likes/dislikes.

Ah well...definitely adding a few of the contenders to my wish list.

I agree that the piglet does give you some useful information.

After the final round I did two things: I reserved A Girl and her Pig at my local library, and I prepared the grapefruit pound cake from Smitten Kitchen.  The cake - amazing!  And I look forward to perusing AGahP.
