Susie and Jane

I have Gourmet, Bon Appetite, eating well, cooks illustrated and fine cooking either from the first issue or back to the eighties. How far back are indexers planning to go and does anyone have suggestions on who may want the older parts of the collection that may never be indexed. I do have hard copy indexes for gourmet, food and wine and Bon appetite.

I really love. Both my cookbooks and magazines, but would like to get more out of them indexed. Since books take longer to index than magazines perhaps a few of us could volunteer to index prior years issues of these magazines. Would there be a way to allow members to tell you how far back their subscriptions go. And see if through the forum we find others who can join in. Realistically any thoughts on whether you plan on indexing back issues of which magazines and how far back. 1990, 1995, 2000?

Alternately does any one have ideas about how through EYB I could learn about who might want them or where I could donate them.

I have back issues of Gourmet, in particular, going back to about 1980 that I would love to see in the index. Others somewhat far back as well. I'm sure there are many of us who do.... I would be interested in helping index if I have the time. My schedule is a bit busy, but it could work out since I could do a little at a time.

We will index as far back for magazines as significant numbers of members own them.  We are working our way back through 2007 and 2006 on Gourmet, through 2008 and beyond for Bon Appétit and Fine Cooking.

lorloff - Cook's Illustarted has been done completely, all the way back to the charter issue.

We will gladly add any issue of a member would like to index it - that would speed up the process considerably. Just email us at [email protected] with the request.

Thanks Jane

This is really helpful. As I begin the process of going through old magazines, if I start with the oldest ones it sounds like as I review them if there is an issue I want to index I email you to have it assigned to me. If there are only a few recipes I am interested I could add them eould you recommed that i add the to personal recipies instead?

Also when I was talking about cooks magazine I meant the precursor to cooks illustrated --cooks magazine. I have a full set of the original releases of both cooks magazine and the original eating well. Do you have a way of knowing if anyone else in the EYB community has these as well?

Thanks for your help and this fabulous site. Every time I encounter another cookbook lover or avid cook I recommend joining to everyone. I usually have my iPad with me and show it to them on the spot. This has been happening at least once a month since I joined. I was wondering is there a way if I get their e-mails, do you have any outreach system? I could forward the e mails to you and you could send them a invitation? I am sure there are others having this experience as well.

We haven't had any requests for the original Cooks and EatingWell magazines.  The best way for us to assess whether there is interest in those titles is for you to request to index a couple of issues.  The magazine will then appear in the magazines list and hopefully anyone who owns it will add it to their Bookshelf.  If it appears on enough Bookshelves we will take over the indexing.  If it doesn't then you, and any other interested members, can carry on requesting to index it.  We are currently have members indexing Vegetarian Times, Where Women Cook and Food and Travel.

If you just find a few recipes you want to add you can first check whether the recipe is available online on the magazine's website.  You can then add the recipe to the EYB Library using the Bookmarklet.  If the recipes are not available online then you should add them as personal recipes.

Thank you so much for spreading the word about EYB - it really helps us as we do not have a publicist.  Word of mouth is our best publicity! We don't have a friend referral system but you are right, we should.
