Do you have to refrigerate an opened can of Lyle's Golden Syrup?

Hi, PatriciaAnn - I'm pretty sure that's not necessary; just make sure the can is well-sealed.  It's entirely possible that this product has been around prior to refrigeration days.  I suspect that refrigerating it, might firm up the syrup more than one would wish.

A colleague mentioned that he uses it on Shrove Tuesday pancakes, which startled me a little - but I now think it might be rather appealing, always supposing one doesn't drown the pancake.

Hi,

Golden syrup in a pantry staple in Austalia and I am quite sure it does not need to be stored in the fridge. It is similar to honey and I imagine if you were to chill it it would crystalise.

On a side note Heston Blumenthal found that the flavours actually intesify when golden syrup is left to age- not sure whether this is true but interesting all the same

Dear napier and Foodelf,

I just re-opened a used can that has been sitting at room temp for about two weeks and it looks ok. So, I think your info that Lyle's doesn't need refrigeration is correct. Thanks for your responses.

PatriciaAnn,
If you really want to set your mind at rest, check out the Lyle Golden Syrup website which as well as saying that they are by appointmment to the Queen, they specifically say "do not refrigerate this product"

Hi Cati,

Thanks for the info. Do you have a link to that website? I found a Lyle's site, but could not find refrigeration listed. This is the one I went to: http://www.lylesgoldensyrup.com/index.php I must have been on the wrong site.

I must have just been lucky that it came up at the top of the google page when I looked. I don't know how to link things but itwas www.wegmans.com/webapp/w.../Productdisplay/product. I think if you type wegmans and Lyle's golden syrup,in it will come up in google.

I would be surprised if golden syrup needed refrigeration after opening.  It's similar, after all, to corn syrup or maple syrup or molasses (treacle), none of which need refrigeration.  Sugar is actually a preservative, so as long as you keep the bottle closed or cover the tin with plastic film to keep the air out it should last for quite some time!

Dear Cati,

I was able to find it on google, thank you.

Golden Syrup sits unrefrigerated in our larder for 6-12 months without problem, but the lid well tapped down!

On the other hand, maple syrup stored out of the fridge developed a mould after 3 weeks.

Maple syrup, once opened, needs to be refrigerated, otherwise it will mold.
