No, not a prize from EYB, but a lighthearted game - suppose EYB has a magic timetraveling device, plus the necessary funds, to whisk you to dinner with your favourite cookbook author - living or dead - whom would you choose and why?

That's a tough one Ray.  My answer depends on the purpose of the dinner!  For girly gossip and probably a good laugh then Nigella.  For flirtation then it's Thomas Keller (my culinary crush).  But the person I would most like to have met is the late Jane Grigson - so knowledgeable, erudite, witty and apparently also extremely nice.

You didn't tell us who your fantasy dinner would be with.

I hadn't really thought it through when I wrote, but I think Nigella for fun food in a warm friendly environment; Richard Olney/Lulu Tempier for a touch of Provencal garlic; Claudia Roden for erudite conversation.

Although there are many I would like to dine with, I would have to say Julia Child. I am reading her biography, and on top of all the respect I have always had for her I have even more now after learning about her life and her efforts in writing Mastering the Art of French Kitchen. There is so much I would like to ask her!

Hi Vickster,

I think that would be a very long meal indeed; I've got the books and the thought of working through them and mastering all the techniques is frightening - you'd certainly have plenty to talk about! Julia Child showed magnificent dedication.

I’d say Michael Pollan. I find him very interesting and knowledgeable.
