How about an iPhone app?   Go to last post Go to last unread

This website is just terrific!  I've already used it a couple of times, and every time I get that recipe list, I can't help but giggle a little bit.  I especially like that it gives you the more unusual ingredients that you'll need to complete it.

The next step for this would logically be an iPhone app.  I have often found myself at the grocery store, picking up something on sale, and wondering what else is in that recipe that I'll need.  Nine times out of ten I have to go home, look up the recipe, and make another trip back to the store.

When the time is right, I highly recommend an app that would allow us to check it, buy all the ingredients, go home and make that dish!

I'm also looking forward to helping index, especially the magazines.  That is something that having many people work on that would be very helpful.

Keep up the good work!

Yes we love the idea too and it is on our to-do list, once we get member indexing completed.  It will be a mobile interface so it can be used by any smartphone, not just iPhone.  As well as being able to look up the ingredients of a recipe you know, you will also be able to keep your shopping list on there (which can be edited) and search for recipes using an ingredient.  So you see a great looking fish at the grocery store but have no idea what recipes you have at home for it.  Search your cookbooks, choose the recipe you want and the ingredients are added to your shopping list.

When we are at the planning stage we will be asking members what other features they would like to see on it.

Definitely interested in a smartphone app... not just for ingredients needed in a recipe, but to look up what books I own. So many times I've seen cookbooks to buy & I can't remember if I already own it! Especially with prolific authors where the titles are similar or series of books. Right now, have top go home and check, or buy the book and possibly return it (especially with sale books, etc)...

I am not an iPhone or smart phone user but I'd love to see it for iPad.

Eat Your Books is perfectly usable on an iPad already.  In fact Fiona and I use iPads when we are demoing the website.  Sometimes the fonts can be a bit small but you just enlarge that area you want to see.

I think a mobile-optimised experience is a great idea.  The experience on the iPhone is not as good as it could be for several reasons. One is the page layout: entering text in the search box results in a zoom level that makes the recipe list too large to scan. (This isn't a problem on the iPad.)

What is a problem on both iPad and iPhone is responsiveness: entering search terms is very laggy and it takes quite some time for keypresses to register. This makes the major feature of the site into something painful to navigate. Even if the searches still took extra time, fixing the text entry so it isn't laggy would make it much easier to deal with.

I do use Eat Your Books on my iPhone, when I'm out shopping, but I try to avoid it. An optimised site would make it so much better!

Thanks for listening.

As I said before, we won't be doing an app but we are currently creating a mobile interface which will allow any smartphone user to easily use EYB.  We hope to have it ready to launch in the next couple of months.
