Woefully underspices -- at least double or triple the amounts!
2/28/12 Made this according to the recipe with the following adaptations: Thinly sliced Napa cabbage, bok choy, Romaine hearts instead of watercress and iceberg. Increased the red pepper flakes to 1/2 t. Omitted salt. Included soy sauce. Included sliced fresh shiitakes. Reheated cooked jasmine rice with small amount chicken broth. Deeeee-licious...
I used this technique (and possibly the crust recipe? can't remember) and it worked very well. So far the most successful pizza I have made.
Tasty enough but mine did not get crispy.
Definitely needs the soda water splash!
The cake is wonderful & rich. The only reason I didn't rate it 5 stars is that I thought it is too difficult to cut the layers in half, they don't rise enough & they would disintegrate. In the reviews on epicurious, someone suggested making the layers in 8" pans if you want to cut them into 8 layers which makes better sense. I made it with the 4 layers which was perfect. I substituted Jack Daniels for the Southern Comfort which was divine. Brought it to a xmas wine tasting dinner and everyone loved it and thought it was the best cake they've ever eaten! Use very fresh dried coconut chips for the outside. Mine were from my local healthfood grocery and they tasted fresh. Would make again!
Coconut-lovers' dream cake. Didn't split the layers, 4 levels of frosting is quite enough, thank you. Easily serves 20 people.
Do not add the butter and only minimal salt so that it is less perishable. A great way to use bundles of extra herbs and makes great gifts for serving with goat cheese, oranges, and avocado toast.
