Privacy Statement

Welcome to EatYourBooks.com ("the Website"), a website owned and operated by Eat Your Books Ltd ("EYB"). The Privacy Statement stated below defines what Members of the Website ("Members") can expect when visiting the Website, along with the Terms of Use which defines what EYB expects from Members. We hope that you will exercise respect for the other Members as well as the material that is made available here. Failure to abide by these terms may result in the termination of your Membership and/or privileges. By registering as a Member and through continued use of the Website you are agreeing to this Privacy Policy and our Terms of Use.

There are certain rules which apply to your use of the site. So, allow us to play the "Big Sister" here and explain to you what those are. If you cannot agree with anything written here, you should not join EYB. Although we don't think they're too Draconian we would be interested in hearing from you if there's anything you don't like. These terms are subject to change and will affect all information collected before and after the changes go into effect (see below).

Privacy Policy

Like any good sister or friend, EYB respects your privacy and will do its utmost to protect it. EYB will not sell any of the information you provide --either when you register or when you use the Website--to any third party. Ever. EYB also reserves the right to collect aggregate information, which will always be anonymous, to be passed on to a third party for our own marketing purposes. (See below)

What information do we collect about you?

First, there is the information that you yourself provide us when you register. Information such as:

  • Your name, your e-mail address, your username, zip code- these are necessary for our admin purposes so we can run the site more efficiently.
  • Your country, your city/state and your own description of yourself - these are all optional.

We also keep track of:

  • Menus and shopping lists you've created
  • Any postings you have made in the chat room
  • Ratings and comments you've made on books and recipes

EYB collects all of this information so we can learn more about you, provide you with information that is relevant to you and to make your EYB experience the best it can be.

You can choose whether to share some of this information with other users by having a Public Profile, or you may want to keep it private with a Private Profile. It's up to you.

Additionally, EYB uses cookies (small files placed on your computer) to tailor our services to meet your individual needs - most membership websites use them so I'm sure you've come across them before. These cookies allow you to access "My EYB" automatically, without having to log in each time. If you refuse or disable cookies on your computer, you will need to log in each time you visit EYB.

When you e-mail a friend, we will store the email address but it will only be used for the purpose you authorize, i.e., one email to tell them about the EYB website plus a reminder if we don't hear from them. Your friend can request to be removed from our mailing list.

What do we do with our members' personal information?

Sometimes, EYB may use members' personal information for marketing purposes such as to inform you of a cookbook event in your area. However, a member will never be identified personally and EYB will never sell/give away or loan your information to a third party, except as detailed in the section below.

We may, at times, offer special promotions or competitions and you may be asked to provide contact details. The information may be supplied to the sponsor of the competition but this will be clear at the time and you always be given the option to refuse to receive promotional mailings and emails from the sponsor.

To whom may we provide EYB members' personal information?

  • Third-Party Service Providers: From time to time, we may need extra help updating our databases, running data reports, or providing customer service. When that happens, a third party service provider may be given access to member information - there will always be a confidentiality agreement in place between EYB and a 3rd party, and their use of the data would be strictly limited to the project for which they were hired.
  • Vendor Affiliates - When you click on a link from EYB to a third party vendor you will be tagged as an "affiliate transaction". We expect that all affiliates will have a similar privacy policy, but EYB cannot guarantee this as once you have left the Eat Your Books website we have no control over the data.
  • Sale of EYB: If, in the future, EYB is sold, EYB members' personal information would be treated as a business asset that could be sold as part of the business. The Terms of Use in this agreement would remain in effect.
  • Law Enforcement: If legally compelled to do so, EYB would divulge EYB members' personal information.

Communications EYB will send to your email address include but are not restricted to:

  • Registration confirmation: EYB will confirm your registration and send you notice when your membership is due for renewal.
  • Website maintenance: If we are having any Website operational issues, or need to schedule down-time for site maintenance, we will let you know.
  • Email newsletter: If you wish, we will keep you informed of relevant new book releases, author appearances and the anything about cookbooks that we think you'll be interested in.

If you do not want to receive promotional emails, you can update your edit your account details My Profile. You can also unsubscribe by clicking on the link at the bottom of any email from EYB.

Changes to the Privacy Policy

From time to time, EYB may need to change this Privacy Policy. Any subsequent changes will affect all members' personal information collected prior to the changes. All changes to the Privacy Policy can be viewed in the "Change Log." That's an EYB promise: EYB will not change any major terms in the agreement without explicitly telling our members. And, we will never go back on our commitment to not sell personal information.
