You can't bear Sharp cheddar cheese on a beef burger with pickled red onions for an acidic bite to cut through the fat.

  • minerva  on  8/28/2013 at 7:04 PM

I love harissa paste on everything! With the salmon I would mix the harissa through a little aioli, the vege burger i would mix the harissa through some minted yoghurt and the beef burger I would mix the harissa through the cooked onions. Yum!

  • baybritta  on  8/28/2013 at 7:47 PM

  • steph12205  on  8/28/2013 at 7:51 PM

  • virb  on  8/28/2013 at 7:58 PM

Beetroot salad - beet, carrot, apple & onion grated with a balsamic/mustard dressing - superb with beef!

    I love what the Aussie's do: a sunny-side egg.

  • smtucker  on  8/28/2013 at 8:09 PM

I am failing this simple test I fear. I top my burger with salt and the top half of my homemade burger bun. I want to taste the freshly ground meat, not salad components. Now, I do think having a dill pickle just off to the side is a bonus.

  • CapeCodCook  on  8/28/2013 at 8:13 PM

A nice big dollop of homemade caponata! On any of the three patties.

  • lorie  on  8/28/2013 at 9:06 PM

I would go with guacamole (especially on a veggie burger).

  • maisie_grn  on  8/28/2013 at 11:53 PM

Being from the South originally, I love anything pickled. So, a stock of pickled red onion on hand is always necessary and on top of my veggie burgers!

  • Trendev  on  8/29/2013 at 12:01 AM

I love burgers, and in our home they are generally topped with home-made relish or chutney, avocado slices and plenty of balsamic caramelised onion. Some very crispy bacon is also a very popular addition.

For a beef burger, it would be my mum's homemade Tomato Relish, made from an old Country Women's Association Cookbook from the 1930s used to belong to my grandma. But really, any good tomato relish would do!

  • wmhinshaw  on  9/18/2013 at 1:02 PM

Need mustard AND mayo on the bun! Old NC style calls for cole slaw (with more mayo) and chili. Hard to beat the traditional lettuce, tomato and sliced raw sweet onions topped with ketchup.

I have recently discovered the wonder that is bacon jam, which is my new favourite topping for a beef burger. All I need to do is work out how to make it! It goes brilliantly with a generous crumbling of blue cheese and a bit of sour, crunchy pickle
