Cookbook giveaway - Better from Scratch

Better from Scratch cookbook

Better from Scratch (Williams-Sonoma) is chock full of recipes for everyday food items that many of us purchase, like ketchup and bacon. You can read author Ivy Manning's views on why it's better to make these items from scratch in our author interview. In addition to the recipes, the book includes tips on food storage and how to make delicious DIY gifts.

We're delighted to offer three copies of Better from Scratch to EYB members. Enter soon - the contest ends on August 15, 2014.

Lemon cordial! It's so easy to make, and taste so much lovelier than the commercial stuff.

  • robinorig  on  7/20/2014 at 4:55 PM

More and more I have been making things from scratch (although in my 20s I made granola, bread, yogurt and many other things from scratch regularly). I've gotten so that I really dislike most bottled salad dressings, both the flavor and the texture and prefer a salad lightly dressed rather than drenched with something thick and chemical tasting. I've always baked from scratch unless it's a fabulous bakery or pastry chef. And my latest is to make my own almond milk after looking at the list of ingredients on store bought and to make my own frozen vegetable bouillon. I've been making canned jams, pickles, pickled corn, etc, for a few years now. But my all time favorite is canning my own roasted tomatoes and tomato sauce with herbs from the garden. There is nothing like using your own fresh tasting canned tomatoes and sauce in recipes in the middle of winter!

I like to use whatever is available-preferably free! Tomato Relish,Plum Jam and Grapefruit Marmalade are all favourites and so simple to make it isn't worth buying them.

Chicken Stock. My kids now tend to run the other way when I pull out the entire chickens from the plastic bag to dismember them into serving-size groups and bags. Everybody has to find the kidneys or look at an esophagus, or something like that. I keep a running frozen bag of bones, etc. to make intense dark stock that beats canned stuff hands down.
