Civil Eats removes paywall
September 3, 2024 by DarcieCivil Eats, an award-winning independent food news website that covers the areas of food and agriculture, especially through the lenses of how these systems intersect with policy, health, and the environment, recently celebrated its 15th anniversary (coincidentally making it the same age as EYB!). In honor of the site’s birthday, they have removed its paywall for at least the next twelve months.
The site notes that “two generous funders—the 11th Hour Project, a program of the Schmidt Family Foundation, and GRACE Communications Foundation—have provided us funding to help us remove our paywall for one year! Our reporting will be free to everyone, everywhere.” They will continue to ask people to support their journalism through contributions, but for now they are dropping the paywall requirement altogether. Previously, free subscribers could only access a limited number of stories before encountering the paywall.
A current sampling of the site’s articles showcases the range of stories the Civil Eats team is reporting. There’s an interesting piece on whether recycled plastic is safe for food use, one on a woman’s journey from McDonald’s employee to farmer, and a review of a documentary on why people are so devoted to making cheese. You can find these and many more intriguing stories at Civil Eats.
