Weird results when looking for miso   Go to last post Go to last unread

I was looking for some recipes that used miso, and quite a lot of the recipes that turned up did not have any miso in them. The difference between a search for miso and one for "miso" is quite large.

The recipes without miso or similar pastes did all have some paste (tomato paste, shrimp paste) and beans. Could it be that miso is translated into bean paste, and the filter then looks for the words bean and paste seperately? If so, could this please be corrected so the filter looks for the two words combined? Still questionable, as not all bean paste is miso, but it still would be a big improvement.

Interesting.  I added some recipes from Hikari Miso site and I noticed that although no miso is included in the ingredient list, your first list did pull it up (the last recipe).  I think that was because it came from Hikari Miso site?

I have this happen often but can usually find the word I am searching for somewhere. But here I am puzzled by the inclusion of

"Javanese" noodles (Mee Java) fromMadhur Jaffrey's World Vegetarian: More Than 650 Meatless Recipes from Around the Worldby Madhur Jaffrey

for which I can find no "miso".

Well that fits the "bean paste" pattern. Tamarind paste and bean sprouts.

This is a known issue with our search - linked ingredients create what appear to be wrong results as the words pull up recipes that do not appear to match the search terms. As wester surmised, miso has an alternative name of bean paste so a search by miso also looks for recipes containing those words. Whenever a search throws up strange results for an ingredient word it is always worth considering a filter - in this case Ingredient / Pantry ingredients / Pastes / Bean. This is how that filter would look in the Library. Of course other bean pastes will still appear but you wouldn't see other ingredients that contain the words bean or paste.

This is an issue we would like to fix but it's going to be a big one so won't be happening imminently..

Looking for the miso=bean paste from miso, I couldn't find it. Looking for it from bean paste, I found it and identified a cookbook that uses the miso-bean  paste

Spinach with bean paste (Horenso with miso)

from Japanese Country Cookbook by Russ Rudzinski and Mike Nelson

I would have expected that it would at least be "fermented bean paste" but nope ...
