I came across a seafood stew recipe that I want to try https://www.greatbritish...ipes/seafood-stew-recipe

I haven't seen samphire for sale at any of the global markets I can get to.  Can anyone suggest an alternative?

Thanks,
Zephy

Head down to your local beach & scavenge ;-)

Try these ideas from gourmet sleuth

  •  Use thin asparagus spears

  • OR - Thin haricots verts (filet beans)

  •  OR - For a briny flavor you can use capers but they will lack crisp texture.

What a good info!

Hi Debkellie

Thanks for the suggestions.  Sadly, scavenging is out-my local beach is 10000 miles away. I think I will go for the haricots and add the capers (neat idea).  I want the briny effect but I want the crisp, too.

I do have a couple of places that sell good fresh seafood, flown in overnight, but so far none of them have branched out to ocean based produce.

Husband thinks fish soup is a bad idea, but I really want to give this a go.

From Cook's Thesaurus, my go to spot to find substitutes comes this samphere substitution:

Sea bean, Rock Samphere or look for Pickled Samphere in specialty shops, or use capers.

Hi

if it's the rock pool image in the recipe that you are after, perhaps blanched spinach or seaweed? I can get dried seaweed here in health food shops and samphire is sometimes available at the fish counter in a posh supermarket.

Best regards from Switzerland
