My son is trying to help out a college classmate who is newly arrived from India.  I am looking for some reliable mail order sources of Indian ingredients, to pass along.  Our local international stores are not very local to the university and tend toward asian and mexican rather than the indian subcontinent.

I have had good experiences ordering online from Spice Station Shop (https://spicestationsilverlake.com). They are located in California. I ordered several items for Indian and Pakistani food that I am unable to find in North Dakota.

However, searching by cuisine on their website is incomplete. I found several items on under the herbs, spices, & blends that were not categorized by cuisine.

Also, where you currently are makes a big difference as there are several small stores with a very targeted inventory in many university towns -- places you find only by asking the right Indian cook.

If you want a spice company that gets to know the producers in India and Sri Lanka, the Diaspora Co. is the place to go to. Not as large a selection, but very high quality. https://www.diasporaco.com/

I am hoping that we can get him to our Global Foods market sometime soon, but having those online options will help.  I did ask my son about where in India, but he didn't think to ask, as a region.  Small midwestern university towns can be depressingly bland, especially if you have lived in upstate NY.  I hope he does find some local Indian cooks, and can help me find new places to shop!  And, of course, adapting to ingredients.  I had an acquiantance from Scotland who had a terrible time with things like sugar and flour, which were just enough different to make her personal recipes fail.
