I finished two third of indexing for The Book of Tofu.  The print is hard to read for me as I have gotten older and I had to reluctantly discontinue.  Maybe there are other books with half finished indexing like this. Any problems or issues with other members finishing those indexing?  Like a list of books needing members to continue with indexing?

I can recheck those entries I made if needed and I can do that within few days.

We are very happy to pass on books that have stalled in indexing to another member indexer. If you see a book on your Bookshelf that has had the status Indexing Now for some time, contact Deborah and she will check with the indexer if they plan to complete the book.

Because I abandoned indexing The book of Tofu, it will not show up as being indexed now in our bookshelf.  I am thinking there are other books like this that because of length, complexity, difficult to read etc, the book indexing have been abandoned and now not showing up as indexing now.  If those books are listed periodically, maybe some members might want to continue.  If not to complete it, but add more indexing.

Maybe this post could be updated when members acknowledge that they won't be finishing a book, and if another volunteer isn't immediately lined up?

I think using this thread to list partially indexed books is a great idea! The fact that a book is started might make taking on an assignment a bit less daunting, perhaps. I work for the site, but I have also done volunteer member-indexing. I know I had indexed over 100 recipes in Cooking Light Way to Cook Vegetarian and had to set it aside when I no longer had time available for member-indexing. If anyone has any interest in picking that one up -- quite a few members own it, though it is a sizeable volume!

I have had the experience of indexing a book partially indexed by someone else- I think they started it then the rules regarding store cupboard ingredients or eggs changed. I had been assigned the indexing and was unaware until I stumbled on it on my library (being bad about reading emails carefully). In fact, I’m wondering if the 3 books on my bookshelf listed as ‘indexing now’ have been assigned to me. ???

Hi Barb_N -- I checked on the 3 Indexing Now titles on your Bookshelf, and I can reassure you that none of them were assigned to you! Hubert Keller's Souvenirs is in-progress with an experienced member-indexer, but the other two books -- With a Measure of Grace and Classic Lebanese Cuisine -- were stalled in member-indexing so I've unassigned them. Neither book has enough recipes indexed (24 and 17 recipes respectively) for us to assign them to a pro indexer to finish right now, but if another member is interested in picking up where the original indexer left off, just place a Request to Index (myself) and you'll have a head-start on the index!

Just a query: can the "indexing now" status be amended to show "indexing now - member indexer" v. "indexing now - pro indexer"?

Maybe the 'indexing now' status should be removed (and the member told they are no longer assigned the book) if a member hasn't indexed anything in the last 6 months?  I know from experience that life sometimes gets in the way, but if you haven't done anything in 6 months it's very unlikely you'll continue.

I've just taken over indexing a book that has had the 'indexing now' status for a very long time (possibly years).  There's another one on my list that has been 'indexing now' for more than a year - possibly the next one I'll tackle.

FJT, we do try to unassign books from member-indexers when it's obvious no progress is being made, but it's sometimes hard to tell when exactly the last activity on an index took place. We also don't want to take an assignment off someone's list prematurely, so we try to follow up with the member first. I've been doing some follow-up today, in fact, so you might see a few "Indexing Now" statuses disappearing! And one of the Indexing Now titles I see on your Bookshelf, Dishoom, should be Indexed very shortly.

Deborah the other book I was thinking about is The Enchilada Queen cookbook - that one has been 'indexing now' for at least a year!

FJT, that's the one I followed up on with the member-indexer. If I don't hear back soon, I'll unassign it.

I just received Spies, Black Ties, & Mango Pies today as a Christmas present- I added it to my wishlist on Amazon on August 21, 2017 when I first saw it on the "Indexing Now" page, so it has been being indexed for more than two years that I know of...

LeilaD, I recently emailed the member-indexer for Spies, Black Ties & Mango Pies to follow up. If I don't hear back from the member soon, I'll unassign it as the index does appear to be stalled, with almost 100 recipes indexed. Perhaps you'd be interested in finishing it up if that's the case?

#16 Posted : Thursday, December 26, 2019 6:13:16 PM(UTC)

I definitely would be interested!

Would you need to have Level 5 seurity clearance LeilaD ? :-) Sounds like it might be an amazing cache of recipes!

Poking my nose back in here so that I don't accidentally start a repeat thread: In 2016 I was browsing "Indexing Now" and found a book to put on my wishlist. I got it for Christmas 2020; today it is still  "indexing now". Would it be possible for me to finish indexing "Kimiko's World"?

#19 Posted : Saturday, September 18, 2021 9:45:54 PM(UTC)

LeilaD - please do request to index Kimiko's World - that was an error that it was showing as Indexing Now as it was not assigned to anyone. If any member ever wants to take over a book assigned to a member that seems to be stalled, please do post here or email to [email protected] and we can assign it over to you.

It looks as if Ruth Kendrick's "Candymaking" has been listed as "indexing now" for a couple of years. I would like to take that one if it is not currently being indexed.
