specialized search help: savory tarts with tomato as main ingredient

How do I search for this?  I can't see that baking, pies and tarts, allows a savory option.

I think this is the best way to do it:

Type in the search box: tomatoes, tart 

Then apply the Ingredient filter for tomatoes (vegetables --> salad --> tomatoes),

Apply the Recipe type filter for Pies, tarts, & pastries (Baking --> Pies, tarts, & pastries), and

Apply the Course filter to exclude Desserts (Course --> Desserts; then click on the green + to turn it to a red -)

Click on My Bookshelf, and then follow the instructions above to find recipes only on your own bookshelf.

The instructions below really helped me to see how the search functions works. But I have a question.

How do I search for a recipe for hummus? If I put "hummus" in the search field I get recipes for hummus as well as recipes with hummus as an ingredient.

This should be the best way to do it:

1. Type hummus into the search box

2. Apply the Recipe Type filter for Dips, spreads & salsas (Recipe Types --> dish types --> Dips, spreads & salsas)

3. Then exclude recipes that have a dip/puree/salsa as an ingredient to eliminate recipes with hummus as an ingredient (Ingredient --> pantry ingredients --> puree/dips/salsas --> click the green + to turn it to a red -)

Doing the search this way, the only recipes you might miss are any "from scratch" hummus recipes that include a puree other than hummus such as canned pumpkin; however, upon closer inspection there were only 3 such recipes in the entire library that were excluded: this, this, and this. Doing it this way tightens up your search considerably, while only missing those three recipes.

I tried this....the negative dessert worked, but "tart" in the top search box didn't retrieve the several recipes i  have for tomato pie, tomato galette, tomato turnover. So I just put tomato in the top search box, used the pies, tarts,pastries filter box and negative dessert. Perfect!

But one thing I noticed...the cookbook Harvest to Heat has a recipe for "creme fraiche galtette with heirloom tomatoes".  tomato is not included as an ingredient in this recipe!  A mistake, I guess. It did show in my search however; does the top search box search on recipe title?

Also, is there a way to search for cold soups?  Putting Gazpacho in the top search box gets everything with gazpacho in the title. "Cold soup" in the top box gets lots of recipes with the words cold and soup in their titles, but not gazpacho recipes that don't have the word cold in the title. Also got "cold spring night asparagus soup" which isn't a cold soup but a soup for a cold night!

From what you said, I assumed you were specifically searching for "tarts," but removing tart from the search box was exactly the right thing to do -- glad it worked!

The seach box is a word search, so it will retrieve any recipe that includes the words you type in the search box -- they could be in the title, ingredients, or categories. However, it does prioritize recipes with those words in the title, assuming they are more of a "main" ingredient and they show up first in the search results. 

There isn't a category for cold soups, so that one is a bit more difficult. I would filter by the Recipe Type "Soups" then do 3 different searches to see what's on my shelf, first one for "cold," then one for "chilled," and then one for "Gazpacho." It's not perfect and something like "soup for a cold night" will still come up, but hopefully there are not too many like that, and you should be able to browse through what you have.

Also, any errors you see can always be reported to the EYB team by clicking "Report an Error" on the bottom right hand corner of your screen.

Hi Cati,

You can search for recipes by a particular author by typing their full name into the search box and putting it in quotation marks. Since you're not sure if it was a slice, bar, or square, I wouldn't type any of those terms into the search box. Instead, I would filter by the recipe type "Brownies, slices, & bars." Here's the step-by-step instructions:

Type in the search box: lemon, "Donna Hay"

Apply the filter "Brownies, slices & bars" (Recipe Types --> Baking --> Brownies, slices, & bars)

This search only turns up two recipes in the whole library, click here to view the results. Of course this search can also be performed on just your bookshelf, by following the above instructions, but since there are only 2 recipes, hopefully its one of those Donna Hay books that you have in your collection.

You can always search within a single book by clicking on the book title and then clicking on "Search this book for recipes." But if you are trying to find a recipe by a particular author across several books/magazines/online recipes/etc. it's best to type their name into the search box along with whatever else it is you're searching for.
