Books I own shows 516 on one page and 525 on another page   Go to last post Go to last unread

I discovered this this morning when I was looking up an ingredient.  It happened that the ingredient was listed on a book that I don't own.   That would be ok, but I wonder what the other 9 books are without going through the whole 516+ books.

I have asked previously if there is any way to show 'when' a book was added by me, but then there was no way to find this information.  If that were the case, that might help in the search for these extra added books, but not necessarily so.

^^

Since I am writing this, although it is on another topic, I did prefer to get more than 25 items on a page (IOW keep adding the next page.) That way if one wanted to search say 4 pages (100 items total) for another ingredient within those pages,  it would be possible.  Now it is not possible without going to each page separately.  Pain!

I'm not sure why it was changed, perhaps to accomodate those who had trouble loadng?

thanks.

I think that issue you had of books being added that you didn't own is now fixed?  So just delete the other unwanted books as you see them come up in your recipe searches.  They don't do any harm in the meantime.

The reason you are seeing different numbers is that you have 516 books, 1 blog and 8 magazines on your Bookshelf - a total of 525 items.  So it will depend what view you are looking at.  If you have the Books tab open you will see 516 as the number.  You can see your numbers at top right on the home page or on your Profile page which you get to from your username at top right (next to Welcome)

On your other point of seeing more than 25 results on a page, you do that by moving the View toggle to the left.  That gives you results with minimum information and 200 results per page.  Or if you still want to see the ingredients then choose the middle View which gives you 50 results per page (this excludes categories). The Help section Recipe Results Explained shows you all the different ways you can view search results.

With the old system you still had to load more results as you reached the end of each 25 results. This got slower as you moved through the results. With the new system you only have 25 results shown at a time so each new load is faster. So I don't see why you think the new system is harder to use.

There were several reasons why we changed the results to pages - as I said, the loading is faster and also it allows people to jump ahead if they want to see a different section of their results.  Also new members often like to go through the indexed books adding them to their Bookshelf.  With pages they can note what page they are on when they need to stop and then they can restart at the same place.

Thanks for your informaiton about the different numbers of books.  I understand now.

^^

As to the other point of seeing more than, shall I say now: 50 results on a page, the 50 results per page still is what I am addressing (after the toggling view.)

Each new load of 50 (or the previous 25) did not increase noticeably my internet time to load the next 25 (now 50 as the last upload of 50 is still there.  However, just in case this is not true, and now one has to load 100 instead of 50, with high speed internet, unless one is using dial-up, uploading/downloading has not been a problem ever with EYB.   Of course, I can't speak to others' problems with this.

What I liked about the previous method  was that when you did download the next 25/50, you still had it in view, whereas now, you only have the SECOND 25/50 in view.

I think it is more cumbersome to not have more than 50 recipes on 'ONE'  page (with inggredients showing,) and then to have to  load another of 3 sets of 50 to get 200 views in order to view all recipes on one window/page.

Why would one not want to view all recipes on ONE page instead of going from page to page to page to page to view the results.  Then one would say, "on what page did I see that recipe and then start looking back to the other pages of 50 to find it (that is loading time also going back from page to page.)  From my viewpoint, if one has only one page of say 200 results, then AFTER those results of say, za'atar are up and viewable, then one can use "Find" to see any other ingredients that might be of use or non-use in those 200.

This new system is not 'harder' to use; it is just cumbersome to have to load and load and load and load and not have a total page to look at and search through.

Yes, I did look at the Help page, but it does not address my point; i.e. I want to see all results, then I after I see these results, I want to see what other ingredients are listed within these results; because I have no idea when I'm searching what these other ingredients might or could be that I want to include or not include.

Thanks, Jane.

Rella, I feel your pain. I suppose we all want different things from EYB. I don't rush home to EYB with the express purpose of finding a recipe to feed the hungry hordes. All my offsprings have migrated to their own kitchens with their own EYB's.
Because I have the luxury of time, I like to browse through EYB, checking through my books reminding myself of some I may have forgotten about. For this I like the 25 to a page to get the pictures because you can more easily visualise where they are stored. Or I might to decide to bring up all Nigella's cake recipes. On my bookshelf that is 103, so under the old system I could open up all 5 pages and then scroll up and down easily on my ipad, looking for ideas, checking ingredients, bookmarking etc.
With the page system since the ipad of course doesn't show the whole page at once I scroll down to bottom and then more than likely I want to check something at the top again. All that is easily done, but here's the rub, because the page numbers are only displayed at the bottom ,to change page I have to scroll down to bottom again.
Would it be possible Jane and Fiona to have the page numbers across the top as well? This might be of use to the ipad users.

Reminding me of another reason why I like all the pages to open when I am looking for an ingredient.

If I have all pages open at one time, I can print out this total page in one Print command.  I don't have to load another page and then print that page, perhaps all on one piece of paper, maybe flowing over onto the next printed out page of maybe one recipe, or use even the computer's command of printing on back of the page.

This uses up paper, which I don't mind one way or another, but one has some printed pages maybe with a few items, some full, making it impossible to print on back of printed pages, to make the printed pages more readable.

Of course, I could cut and paste (page by page) of the list of particular books to a Word document and then print it out, or I could cut and paste to a Word document the books that I am interested in and then print it out.

With the 25/50 to a page, printing out is a real nuisance, either way.

Why would one print out, one would ask?  I have a library that I will take the printed out list to and look through that list.  Of course, some times, the list would be short, othertimes long. So, I take the list to the library, as I use a PC, not a hand-held, to take to the library to go through my books that have a recipe that I like.  Sometimes then I bring a few books back to the computer, to scan a recipes.

I know that EYB has many wonderful features, and I can't praise them all, but it seems as in some other well-used online programs that one uses constantly (food and other), they are often changed 'for the better' but will often leave some users behind who don't feel that way about one or two features that they adored and have been changed for some reason one knows naught, and just do not accommodate their easy usage.

However, EYB thanks for being there.

Rella, we do understand your point but we really had many more members asking for pages than we had members complain when we changed from one long list. The loading time and strain on the server capacity is much less when members are viewing one page at a time. This benefits all members using the site.

As I said before, the printing can be done using our minimal view, which lists 200 results per page. Surely that Is more than enough to take to your bookshelf? The minimal view lists the recipe title, book title and author which sounds perfect for your needs.
