Searching our own Notes   Go to last post Go to last unread

I have requested this before but it's time to do so again.  I would find the website about 95% more useful if I could search my own notes.  I often make meticulous notes on recipes I've cooked.  On EYB it's almost impossible to find past reviews without knowing the book it came from. Today when I wanted to find that enchilada recipe I've made before and loved I had to go to another website that I've used because there my reviews are searchable.

When I review a recipe, I add a bookmark ‘have reviewed’. I can search within these recipes, for example ‘enchilada’.

You can also add the EYB Bookmark "I've cooked this" which allows you to filter your recipe searches by recipes you have already cooked (and has the added bonus of the chef's hat before the recipe title turning green). You could go through your recipes you have added Notes for from your Notes tab on your Profile page (accessed from the menu under your username at top right) and add the bookmark to each one. Then next time you want to find a recipe you know you have already cooked you just search that filtered list.

Searcahable notes is on our (very long) development to-do list.

My problem too.  Good to know there is a work-around to it.

I had figured out that I couldn't search notes pretty early on and was trying to remember to check off "I cooked this" so I could find them.  I am wondering if there could perhaps be a prompt that pops up (like the "make this a private note" prompt)  saying something like "Do you want to bookmark this?"

This just seems like one of those very basic things that should get pushed to the top of the development list.  I would hazard a guess that many more people would use this feature than will use Digital books which had to be a much bigger project.  The notes that we all leave are an integral part of the site and it would seem only logical that one should be able to search their own notes.  I'm not particularly interested in a work around that only creates more work.  I had been regularly adding notes when I made a new recipe and even moving my reviews over from cookbooker but without this functionality the notes add very little value for me.  I know I sound curmudgeonly but this one feature is the reason I greatly preferred cookbooker.  As things currently stand, I add a note here and then add the exact same note at cookbooker just so I can go there to search.

Jane is correct - Using the bookmark "I've cooked this" works great! I was wondering why I bothered to always select this bookmark when adding a note, and now I know why. I just tried using it and got a list of all the recipes I have cooked and left notes for.

My only complaint is that a bookmark query on the site is very slow. No other queries on the site are this slow.

Yes, using a bookmark is definitely an option for a new member. I on the other hand added 827 notes over the past years, so unfortunately not an option for me to manually add this bookmark to all my past notes, though I will do for my future ones. I would really appreciate if the Notes Search feature would move further up on your long to do list.

I don't use the Digital Book Feature at all.  I also no longer sign up for any book giveaways because I only want English language kindle books if I can help it.  I only buy hard copy books  which are not in kindle format or Japanese language books since I cannot buy kindle books from Japan.  I also stopped looking at featured books because of the digital book format since I cannot save featured recipes anymore.

Rinshin - you can save featured recipes from EYBD Previews in exactly the same way that you save online recipes. You click the +Bookshelf button and the recipe is then on your Bookshelf. In the EYB Library there are 682 Recipe Previews that can be accessed and saved.

Astrid, I was in the same boat as you, but I've just been adding to this bookmark whenever I come across a recipe that I flagged as already trying before. (I had more than 1,000 notes when I started! I've whittled my way down to about 200 or so that I haven't added to the I've cooked this bookmark.) So don't give up yet!!!

Still don't understand.  If I put I've cooked this bookmark on the notes, how do I search through all the the recipes found in I've cooked this bookmark unless I go through each title?

Bookmarks are separate to Notes. Bookmarks allow you to filter your recipe searches using EYB Bookmarks (I've Cooked This, I Want to Cook This or Favorites) or your own Bookmarks. To filter your recipe searches by the bookmark I've Cooked This you apply the bookmark under "Only Show" in the right column. If you are unsure how to create, use and apply bookmarks, there is a whole Help section on Bookmarks. Also, Tutorial 4 is on Bookmarks - tutorials are accessed from the green Need Help? button at bottom right (tutorials are not available on phones).

Thank you Jane, I got it now.  That sure helps in searching.
