What is your favorite homemade food to receive as a gift?   Go to last post Go to last unread

Of course, we spend most of our time at this site talking about what we love to cook for any reason / occasion BUT fall in central Ontario and a couple of lovely and unexpected food gifts from friends made me think about this. For me, a mason jar of homemade chili sauce and a bottle of home tapped maple syrup (often presented in a recycled Canadian rye bottle!) are over the top treasures to be hoarded and whose use is carefully planned! Of course I am grateful for all gifts but these 2 items leave me in awe of my friends who take the time to make (and give) these treasures.

Sloe gin is always welcome here. Tablet (crumbly heaven) given the effort to make it. I was gifted some amazing chilli jam once (hand made from a craft stall), no recipe has ever lived up to it. Anyone giving me pistachio paste/spread has a place in my heart. Great olive oil or tapenade are gifts I love to give and receive. Regional sweets (there are 100s here in France), especially those that are hard to source, are always welcome too. Food gifts are the best gifts is what I am trying to say. :-)

I'm hoping that readers interpret my question as "what is the ultimate treat to be given that you don't make yourself ??" I often gift jars of flavoured roasted nuts and all sorts of baked items......the things I mentioned are the treasures that I do not make myself :)

Homemade sauces, of all types. From salsa to barbecue to pasta, well sealed or with a use by date, to ensure food safety. My daughter made a mustard from scratch once and it was divine.

At Christmas when there is likely to be a lot of chocolate/cake/sweet stuff in the house (received as gifts and also self made/bought in) I find it a bit of a pain to receive home made cakes/cookies/candies that inevitably have to be eaten quite quickly before they go off. I much prefer to receive things with a longer shelf life, and especially savoury things. One friend last year gave me wild garlic pesto that she had made and it was wonderful! Easy to use and a welcome antitode to all the 'Christmas' food I'll probably have got sick of by the 26th anyway.

For receiving I love herb seasoned nuts. The family like sweets - fudge and cookies. I make many home made gifts and the ones I'm asked for year after year are fruit jams and butters, infused vinegars, and more recently, flavored salts and homemade extracts.

Things that I am unlikely to make for myself as a household of one - special kimchi's, rice bran pickles (nukazuke), mostarda, mithai, halvah ...

I don’t really get homemade foods as gifts, but if I was, I’d like jams or condiments such as mustard. I always welcome honey from home hives too.
