My most recently purchased cookbook is Tender, with which I'm currently besotted.  I've admired Nigel Slater's writing for years and already have his Kitchen Diaries.  This book deals with each vegetable in a separate chapter and I've already got at least a dozen recipes I'm dying to try.

I made "A Stew of Oxtail & Onions for a Cold Night" from the onions chapter and my guests adored it.  It's a different approach from my traditional oxtails recipes - this calls for oxtails, onions, bay leaves, white wine, both grainy and smooth Dijon mustards and is finished with some cream.  I'm already planning to make it again next week.

Nigel Slater writes beautifully and I wish I could sit across from him at his kitchen table and participate in long, rambling discussions of food, herbs and gardening.

I really want this book too, Foodelf.  My Nigel Slater books (I have them all except for this one) are among the most stained in my kitchen, always a good sign.  It hasn't been published yet in the US but my husband has a trip to London in a couple of weeks so I think I might need a present.

Hi, Jane - I had no trouble ordering Tender through Chapters/Indigo Books online in Vancouver, Canada and they've also got it on Amazon.

You can probably tell I'm delighted with my copy and can heartily recommend it, especially to someone who already likes Nigel's writing and recipes.

I'm also going to try a couple of his recommendations for the garden, too.

Good luck!

This is such a wonderful book - I just hope it will be indexed at some point. The recipes really make the ingredients sing - no great long lists or lengthy and complicated preparation stages, just great vibrant recipes. For anyone who likes Mr Slater's style, this is a must. BTW, there will soon be a Tender volume 2 - this time on fruit. I just can't wait for it to come out.

I am currently in England so I will buy both Nigel Slater books (that will increase my luggage weight considerably for the flight home).  And then I will get them indexed as soon as I get back.  I'm a big Nigel Slater fan too and own all his books.

This is wonderful news! I've not seen the new one yet, but vol 1 is such a fantastic read - I'm sure you will love it.

I'm so delighted to learn we'll be indexing soon ... I love this book and can't wait to check out the fruit volume.
