My most recently purchased cookbook is Tender, with which I'm currently besotted. I've admired Nigel Slater's writing for years and already have his Kitchen Diaries. This book deals with each vegetable in a separate chapter and I've already got at least a dozen recipes I'm dying to try.
I made "A Stew of Oxtail & Onions for a Cold Night" from the onions chapter and my guests adored it. It's a different approach from my traditional oxtails recipes - this calls for oxtails, onions, bay leaves, white wine, both grainy and smooth Dijon mustards and is finished with some cream. I'm already planning to make it again next week.
Nigel Slater writes beautifully and I wish I could sit across from him at his kitchen table and participate in long, rambling discussions of food, herbs and gardening.
