Missing "Index Soon" books   Go to last post Go to last unread

Recently I've noticed that books that were previously on my "Index Soon" are no longer there and, have not been indexed.

Three recent examples are:

Vegetables by Jean Pare - This book was only on a few bookshelves so I'd assumed it was being Member Indexed and perhaps the member changed their mind but then I noticed;

Four Seasons Cookery by Margaret Costa - This book had been on my Index Soon list for several months, perhaps over a year.  It's on 40+ bookshelves and all of a sudden, it dropped off the list.

Every Grain of Rice by Fuschia Dunlop - This dropped off the the Index Soon list, appeared as Indexed then disappeared all together.  I see now that the book is back in the Library but no longer Indexed or, listed as Index Soon.

When a book is designated as Index Soon we don't have the option of requesting it to be indexed so if something changes, it would be very helpful if we could be notified and, if EYB would assume we would want it indexed and automatically "Request Index" on our behalf.

I thought I'd point this out in case there may be a technical issue since it's now happened on at least 3 occasions.

Well spotted Breadcrumbs.  We are having a clear out of books that members requested to index but never started.  So they would have been sitting for a while as Index Soon but are now back as Unindexed so members can now request EYB indexes them or to index the book themselves.

In some other cases a professional indexer was meant to be indexing a book (as was the case for Four Seasons Cookery) but they dropped out.  Annoying for me as she has my copy of the book and has never returned it! That book will soon be reassigned to another professional indexer.

Every Grain of Rice by Fuchsia Dunlop was professionally indexed but the indexer in error added recipes from a different book of the same name.  This was spotted by a member (thanks Gio) so we had to remove the recipes, find an indexer who can get hold of it and we hope to have it indexed very soon.

For both the books above we know they should be indexed ASAP.  There is also a Rick Stein's English Seafood Cookery that the indexer "borrowed" my copy and didn't do so that is high on our list too.  The member index requests that we are releasing are generally on few Bookshelves.

Thanks Jane, that explains it!  Sorry to hear you've lost those books as well. I hope you didn't have a lot of personal notes in them, that would be terrible.

I likely wouldn't have caught on to this except I'd put the index soon produce/market books together on my bookshelf and I was looking for Margaret Costa's coleslaw recipe the other day and I thought I'd add my notes to EYB if the book was indexed.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly!

Interesting to read this topic, I checked my own 'index soon' list and found it was down to four books, including one that I have just finished indexing myself and am checking through before submitting.

I am sorry that your books have disappeared Jane, very frustrating for you and it is disappointing about Margaret Costa and Rick Stein. Has  Alastair Little's Food of the Sun met the same fate ?  Those three books had been on my 'index soon' list since I joined EYB a year ago. Alastair's book is one of my most well thumbed and used. I shall just have to keep indexing some more UK books !

Yes, Food of the Sun was another one that went missing but luckily I have another copy of that one so it will be indexed very soon.  We would love it if you wanted to index some of your UK books!  Though we are also trying to recruit more British professional indexers - if any EYB members know anyone interested in this work (good culinary knowledge, attention to detail, ideally some data inputting experience) then ask them to contact us.

Aha, mystery solved! Four Seasons had been on "Index Soon" since I joined in December, and I just noticed that it was back to "Request Index", so I requested it again. Hopefully this time you'll be luckier with your indexer -- pretty annoying to lose your copy :(

Looking on the bright side, a couple of my books have been newly indexed. I wouldn't mind doing more member indexing, but I'm just too busy and spend too much time on the computer already.
