JAne & Fiona - have you given any thought to having some sort of "instant message" element to the site to enable members to ask questions of each other directly.. for example, when members share a note about a book or recipe, it may be nice to be able to click on their name and engage in a dialogue .. one specific reasons I'd like this is for those books that others may have in common with me, but for which I have  "lost pages"or again specifically, puppy  chewed dog eared books... appreciate it may be perceived as an "intrusion" but a "block this person" could also be adopted (akin to facebook's approach)...

It is something that has been on our development to do list for some time. But at the moment we have to prioritize developments that will expand our membership. So rest assured it will happen at some point but only when we have the funds!

I'm not sure on what debkellie was thinking for a use for this but for me it would even be nice if I could 'tag' someone here to ensure they see a discussion I'd like their input on. To me the open forum that anyone can contribute to is more of a sense of community that always went with cooking, so much like a big potluck or a holiday meal

I'm amazed and in awe of how many cookbooks some of you cooks own.  I've always owned in the neighborhood of 75.  As my taste changes ....right now Vegan for health problem...I often give away ones I'm not using.  Or those 'why did I buy this'? books.

I have trouble finding places for my cookbooks.  When you get in the really high numbers,  where do you keep them?

I joined EYB to keep track of recipes and books.  Still working out the bookmark system!  Some recipes are under 5 different bookmarks.  Yikes.

Good Cooking to all

I've given away some of mine, and I have just as many on Kindle because they were cheap on Amazon and appeared to have some recipes I'd like to try :)  I also score quite a few used trolling the local good will and used book shops.  The print books I have I keep in a Closetmaid cubical shelf in the kitchen. I have one 2x4 and one 2x3 cube units near full and there are more of the books I don't use so much but don't want to give up hiding out in the living room where we have even more book shelves thanks to my bibliophile husband :)

More than 2/3 of my books are kindle, mainly obtained during super cheap sales. I know many folks dislike using e-cookbooks, but I don't mind myself. The other hundred or so are in bookshelves in our dining room, and I tend to cull if I start expanding beyond that area. But at this point, I really only buy paper books if I can't get them electronically or if they are a favorite or favorite author.

My husband and I have our _own_ rooms besides our bedroom.  We both have big passion in our hobbies and we find it necessary to have our own rooms.  The rooms are close to eachother so no problem conversing if we want to.  My room is filled with cookbooks and magazines in both English and Japanese languages along with desktop PC, laptops, ipad, TV etc.  The bookcases ar mostly bought via Ikea and are stacked and bolted to the walls.

Besides my room, I also keep cookbooks close to entrance way with better bookcases filled with books and ornaments.  I have 3 or 4 ceiling high bookcases there.

Re: bookshelves / storage -- When I joined EYB there were probably sixty cookbooks here, and now there are just about twice that many. [My Bookshelf in EYB is much bigger, because it contains wishlists and books of interest at the library and at friends'.] Have just reached the physical limits of the convenient bookshelves, so it's time to slow way down on acquisitions and cull some of the lesser-used (&/or convert them to Kindle).

Because I volunteer at a monthly book sale at our library, I'm exposed to great bargains too often to kid myself that there won't be more incoming cookbooks. But there are five to ten that wouldn't be terribly missed, and that'll create enough space for library sale finds.

Usually, I have no trouble waiting to acquire a book until it's been around a while, even a decade.  But this year I gave myself All Under Heaven for Christmas because there's really nothing like it, and I know it will be such enjoyable winter reading. Have learned a ton already.
