I’m interested in trying the low FODMAP diet. If anyone is using the diet and can recommend a reliable, delicious cookbook please do.

I tried the low fodmap diet on several occasions and used many books. Sorry to say there was no one book that I found to be better than the others, I just did a bit of pick and choose from all of the ones available from my local library. I did find some dishes in each book that were good, however, and I reviewed some from The Everything Guide to the Low-Fodmap Diet by Barbara Bolen on this site. Also, if you have any older, simpler cookbooks, they tend to have some good dishes that are low fodmap if you just cut out the onions. (Recipes like shepherd's pie for example if you aren't vegetarian are easily adaptable). The app available from Monash university has several ok recipes. Lastly the website "a little bit yummy" has quite a few recipes that might be worth a try, and I also found it to be a good source of information on the diet itself.

Eliza, thank you. This is helpful. I’ll check my library and the Monash website.

Isn't a website for cooks and their books entirely the wrong place to ask for advice about diets?

Beware the miracle diet. It doesn't exist.

BellaCat, thank you for the warning. My question was about cookbooks that are good when one is following a low FODMAP diet.

@Bellacat I respectfully disagree. We all use EYB for different reasons. I started buying new cookbooks when my daughter was diagnosed with a number of food allergies. As I already followed a vegetarian diet this presented me with a number of difficulties and I had to rethink the way I cook entirely. This led me to research and read new cookbooks and eventually to EYB to keep track of purchases.

"Diets" aren't always followed for weight reasons (although if they are there's nothing wrong with that if done sensibly). If anyone wants to chat to me about vegetarian/vegan/dairy-free/nut-free/gluten-free/sesame free diets I'm your woman and now have an extensive collection of relevant cookbooks! I would be happy to answer questions about these from other members. Unfortunately I don't know much about FODMAPs @bwolfe2 but I wish you luck.

Guess you know about this web site:  http://fodmapfriendly.com or this one http://www.shecanteatwhat.com/about/ (diet blog)

And EYB has 26 FODMAP specific cookbooks - go for one with lots of notes! (search FODMAP)

Hannah,

Respectfully,

The original poster was 'interested in trying' the FODMAP diet. This regime is recommended for sufferers of irritable bowl syndrome type illnesses like abdominal pain. If this is the case one should seek medical assistance before casually adopting the diet with a view to weight loss. My advice would be to seek the help of a qualified nutritionist.

I love eyb too. 400 books and still going. That's a disease no nutritionist can fix. I'm currently trawling through the Christmas related recipes (no restrictions)!

@Bellacat, I would tend to agree with you and it drives me crazy sometimes! I remember seeing Fodmap friendly soup on my local shop and just roll my eyes (as in what the ... is that thing again). And it amazes me how defensive people can get when you challenge their preferred diet, I always laugh internally, then give up and move on to another topic.

But anyway it takes all sorts, and it is "quite" harmless, pending making your cooking life difficult and interesting...

Personnally I eat everything, except blue cheese, as my father traumatized me when I was a kid telling me it was the house of the warms, and this is why there was blue holes in it :/ and raw tomatoes, kiwis, or passion fruit (or anything with jelly like stuff in it).

I guess I could create my crazy "no blue no jelly" diet too !! :)

I was on the low FODMAP diet a couple of years ago. (It did clear up the stomach issues I was having, and I was able to reintroduce foods in moderation after a couple of months.) I tried a few of the cookbooks that were available then, and the one that had the recipes I liked the most was The Complete Low-FODMAP Diet: A Revolutionary Plan for Managing IBS and Other Digestive Disorders by Sue Shepherd and Peter Gibson. (Only the UK version is in EYB, with a slightly different title.) And I liked Kate Scarlata's blog. Like @eliza, I found there wasn't one great source of recipes - I used the low FODMAP books and websites and would pick and choose, and all of them had some things that looked good (but quite a bit that didn't). Making tasty food with no onions or garlic is hard!  I found that many of my cookbooks had recipes that could be adapted, as long as I avoided oniony recipes. Using either garlic olive oil or canola oil for recipes that called for garlic worked well. I liked the Mantova brand olive oil.

Monash university has a good website and App you can use. I would say go ahead and try it. I am now fully in control of my IBS after eliminating the foods that we're giving me issues and my rosacea has also cleared up. I just adapt my ordinary recipes to exclude the offending foods which is tricky as onions are an issue. Good luck.
