Is it just me downunder in OZ that is unable to access hyperlinked New York Times recipes without taking out a subscription to that service? If its just me, that's OK.. but it sort of defeats the purpose of a hyperlink. Is the recipe is only accessible through a pay wall? Today's experience of that was the best roast beef for sandwiches which takes me to a paywall.

I have a trick for this : Melissa Clark columns are also published in the Seattle Times with no paywall, just google your recipes with Seattle and Melissa Clark added as keywords

The link for this one is : https://www.seattletimes.com/life/food-drink/a-roast-beef-sandwich-the-way-a-new-york-deli-makes-it/

If that's a recipe for roast beef, why are they illustrating it with a photograph of roasted chickens, I wonder.

This has been an interesting thread to read as I am the one who posted the comment on the recipe last week. I am in Canada and I really just googled "how to cook roast beef for sandwiches" and got right to the cooking.nytimes.com recipe. After making it and then seeing MC's name I came to EYB and found the blog (which I actually first thought was a MC book :) . I have added the blog to my bookshelf and can access recipes from there. I am also curious re: the person who sees a roast chicken ?? I am looking at a lovely thick cut roast beef sandwich.

We do not generally link to recipes behind a paywall unless the site offers a limited free access option e.g. 4 free articles per month. The reason we continued to index Melissa Clark recipes after the NYT put up the paywall is that she is one of our complete author indexes so if we stopped indexing her NYT column then her recipe index would be incomplete.

Thanks folks for the reply... I was beginning to think it was just me! Seattle times is the post with the pics of roast chickens..;-) (but at least the recipe is available there, so thanks agaillard! And thanks averythingcooks for your note .. that was my inspiration). I'll try the workaround in future when I hit a paywall ;-)

debkellie, it is very odd that two unrelated chicken recipe photos show at the top of that Seattle Times roast beef sandwiches page! They're both from the NYT so maybe it was just a mixup on the Times' end with "roasting" photos?

I also can only see a roast chicken! On an android phone from London, UK using the link for The Seattle Times

SO glad its not just me.. maybe this "I see roast beef" // "I see roast chickens"  would make a good personality test for the psyches in the group!!
