First of all, I would like to say that I love this new feature!  As I was starting to index a few of my online recipes, I was realizing that many of them are originally from magazines. So what I was wondering is that if a particular magazine is indexed in the future and there are already a couple of member-indexed online recipes from that same magazine, would the two get linked? Kind of like the different editions of the same cookbook? Or would we end up with a lot of duplication? I guess the same question could be asked for blog recipes. If a person indexed some of their favorite blog recipes and that blog gets indexed sometime down the road.  Just curious...

Thanks Chris, glad you discovered this wonderful new feature which just went up last night.  We have planned for the eventuality that a member-indexed online recipe would later be indexed as part of a magazine or blog index.  When we are indexing a magazine or blog it will merge in any recipes with the same URL.  So any ratings or comments already made will be added to the magazine or blog recipe and everyone who has that recipe on their Bookshelf will keep it - they won't actually notice anything as all the details will be the same.

That sounds great! 

Anyone who wants to see the latest online recipes can do so by clicking Online recipes in the Filters at top right and Sort by Recently added.  You will then see the latest member added recipes as well as the latest added recipes from blogs that we index.  You can scroll through the recipes clicking Add to Bookshelf for any you are interested in.

I love this idea but the bookmarklet under the heading "Recently on Eat Your Books" and the one in the article are not working. Once it is added to my favorites bar, clicking on it just opens a png picture of the bookmarklet. The one on the right side of the home page works as advertised!

The images in the blog post and the Recently added on EYB are just images to illustrate the feature, not code to add the bookmarklet.  You need to go to your home page (by clicking the EYB logo at top left) and click the Add to EYB Recipes box to drag and drop onto your Favorites toolbar.

Alert for all iPad users - there is a problem adding bookmarklets on an iPad or iPhone.  This effects all bookmarklets not just EYB's.  We are trying to work out some way to get around the issue.

Jane, thanks for the tip for finding recently added online recipes...just wanted to mention that when I did this, I noticed that someone(s?) has been adding recipes with just a single category or sometimes a few categories and no ingredients. Doesn't seem very helpful when it is done this way...

Thanks chris08226 - we spotted that too and we have added all the missing ingredients and alerted that member.  I think it's going to be a learning curve!

That did bring up another issue, that we don't want to add recipes from aggregator sites such as Food.com.  We had already blocked a lot of the sites that just accumulate recipes from other sites and we have now added Food.com.  The idea of Eat Your Books is that we index high quality original recipes from cookbooks, magazines, apps, blogs and websites.  If the recipes have just been lifted from another site then we don't want to link to them - we want the original source.

But there is nothing to stop members adding such recipes to their Personal recipes.  There are no blocks on the sources for those recipes.  We will be adding a field for the URL for online recipes so members can add any recipe they like.

Despite most things being so incredibly easy on an iPad, unfortunately adding Bookmarklets to the Favorites bar isn't one of them!

We've put together a Help file that explains how to do it.  It only takes a couple of minutes to do, but there are 13 steps!  If you're familiar with Bookmarks on the iPad - you basically create a Bookmark then go in and edit it and change the URL to Javascript code (copy from the Help file) and rename it.  Simple!

Does this feature apply to recipes on Epicurious?  I hope so, because I have a couple of hundred recipes saved over there.  If it does, how exactly would I save them on EYB?  Thanks.

Laura - we would love to have more recipes from Epicurious added to EYB.  The explanation of how this works is in our Help section.  The only sites we are blocking are those that do not create their own original recipes but take the recipes from other sites or rely on members posting their own recipes.  These are called aggregator sites.  EYB was not set up to be a site for home recipes - there are lots of other sites around doing that.  We want to provide a search engine for great original recipes from cookbooks, magazines, apps, blogs and websites.

Members can still add any recipes they like to their personal recipes - there is no block on the sources there.

There seems to be some confusion that some members don't realize that when they add an online recipe to EYB they are adding it to the Library where everyone can access it (as well of course to their own Bookshelf).  For that reason the indexing standards (categories and ingredients) are the same as for all other recipes on EYB.  They have to be otherwise no-one will be able to find the recipes.  If you want to add a recipe without adding categories or ingredients then it should be added as a personal recipe that only you can see.

Firefox is my browser.  Does this feature work for Firefox?

ellabee - you should definitely be able to add the bookmarklet to your favorites bar on Firefox.  You can read the instructions in the Help section on how to add an online recipe.

What a great idea! I've just tried it out, and if you've already done some member indexing and know the rules it's really easy; I've just tried it. I have a load of bookmarks in my "recipes to try" folder -- I'll definitely be adding them here.

I can't get button to drag to my favorites bar.  Am I not doing something right?

I have a question about editing a recipe. It appears as if the member who indexes a particular recipe would be able to edit it by clicking on the Pencil icon. For example, I indexed a blog recipe and realized after I hit "save" that it should also be indexed as "Quick/easy" as well. I made the change and clicked save, but when I went back to check, it did not seem to have registered the change to the entry. 

Thanks, Jane, but the blog post is not enough for someone who has no idea what a Favorites bar is.  Firefox has nothing called that, and I don't know what the equivalent action would be.

It sounds like a nice feature, but I think I'll wait until I either know more about Favorites (Bookmarks?) in browsers and/or there are lots more EYB users who've set it up.

Jaswany - can you let us know what browser you use and we can investigate why you cannot drag and drop the bookmarklet.  It's always a good idea to have the latest version of your browser installed so check to see if that is the case.

Chris08226 - we are finding a delay in the registering of changes on the search results page.  If you click on the recipe details page (by clicking the recipe name) were the changes you made registered there?  We will be putting up a new release of the site in the next day or two which will fix this delay issue.

ellabee - all browsers have a favorites bar.  On Firefox it is the space below the URL box (the place where you type in the name of the site you want to visit).  You may already have some Favorites pre-loaded - Most Visited, Latest Headlines, etc.  When you open a site that you use a lot, click on the tab and drag it to the gray space below the site URL.  You can edit the name on the Favorites bar by right-clicking then clicking Properties.  This is where you store the names of the sites you use all the time so you can just click on the link to launch the site.  Or where you store Bookmarklets such as EYB's, so whenever you see an online recipe you want to add to your Bookshelf (and to the EYB Library), you just click the Bookmarklet.  Let me know if any of this is confusing.

I also use Firefox. Through experimentation, I was able to find my Bookmarks Task Bar, which I had hidden, as there are too many little lines eating up screen space at the top, under the Bookmarks/Task Bar clickable link.  I moved the bookmarklet EYB add thing to the task bar, and eventually got it to show up in my Bookmarks, under Food, under EYB...which is how I sort things.  However, when I click on that Bookmark link while on an interesting blog recipe, all I get is a new screen with a little "[plus sign]Add EYB Bookmarklet".  Nothing seems to happen. I can't click and make that command do anything.  Shouldn't I be getting a new screen asking for indexing input?
