I think there's a lot more to the story than Netfix has presented. Her family seemed a bit strange especially her father. Bus & thrown comes to mind.
The ex-wife was absolutely hilarious in describing her time with him.
I'd probably sum it up as the story of 2 very damaged people.
I thought her father was just being honest. I didn't remember that the ex-wife was so amusing, but I may have been distracted, because it kept looking to me like she'd had some low-quality plastic surgery done on her face. But the documentary does almost leave one with more questions than answers. I kept thinking to myself, "Didn't Sharma ever talk to her family about her relationship?" Didn't they bring it to her attention that her husband was crazy and that she was in an abusive relationship? I mean, I realize that it often takes a long while for people in abusive relationships to even come to that realization, but it still seems like it should have happened sooner than it did. IDK, when I was young, the moment in a relationship that it stopped being fun, I went running into the bosom of my family. And it didn't seem like she was estranged from them: the sister said they were close, and Sharma mentioned having a bond with her mother (albeit, the bond is all of the money that they both gave to this creep.)
The most interesting theory that I read in the IMDb reviews (and a little similar to yours) is that Sharma married Anthony for the money that she thought he had access to and then felt so guilty about that that she allowed him to punish her relentlessly. However, I also learned later that she had sexual relations with her attorney while the case was going on. Surprisingly, that wasn't even mentioned in the documentary.
