Do any of you have a good online source for bulk buying rye flour? We've been to every shop in Birmingham, Alabama and were only able to locate a few 12oz bags at Whole Foods for an extreme price. It's the same story with whole wheat and semolina flour. All were less popular here and got displaced by gluten free stuff on the shelf in the last year. I'm not sure what source would be best pricewise and quality wise for buying baking ingredients online.  Any tips?

Flourist in British Columbia ships to the US and Canada. Their rye flour is their least expensive at $14.95 (Canadian) for 2 kg.
I have ordered from them for years and really like their flours.

I'm not sure of the quantity you are looking for when you mention bulk buying. But do look at King Arthur Flour. They sell all the flours you mention and their products are of excellent quality. There are also many artisan mills throughout the country. I buy light rye flour from Janie's Mill in Illinois. I rely on Barton Springs Mill in Texas for cornmeal and for whole wheat flour. Their Rouge de Bordeaux whole wheat flour is absolutely the most flavorful flour I've ever used. It's pricey, though.

You might check out Bob's Red Mill. They produce a wide range of products and do have rye flour in bulk:

Thanks, all. I decided on King Arthur because I saw their darker rye flour on sale (~$3.5/lb after shipping versus $9.32/lb light rye flour packets we can only find at heath foods store). I'll keep the other suggestions written down too for next time. Bought enough rye for several months and some semolina flour that I had never seen before. Excited to try out more of the rye recipes in the Nordic Baking Book!

I live in South Florida and have the same problem finding ingredients. For rye flour, I purchase King Arthur's Organic Medium Rye from Amazon. 3 lbs for $9.95.

In general, Amazon is an excellent source for hard-to-find kitchen items and ingredients.

Hayden Mills is one I'll keep in mind, too. That purple barley looks interesting.

Still no rye flour here. Fedex lost or damaged the package in transit, and after 4 days of no updates from the shipper as to its condition KAF said they would reship.  The perils of online shopping! I've been using a lot of local cornmeal and white flour lately, but still looking forward to when the special flours arrive. Maybe another 2 weeks.

I was delighted to find Hayden Flour Mills and just put in an order. Such a useful forum discussion, many thanks!

I highly recommend Barton Springs Mill, located near Austin, TX. If you need more than 5-pound bags, just send them an email to ask. They ship very quickly. I buy all of my flours from BSM.

Two other online sources to consider are Central Milling and Breadtopia
