Anyone using Mastadon to discuss baking/cooking?   Go to last post Go to last unread

EYB is great for finding books or recipes of interest and I would not be without it but I would like the opportunity to "chat" with other cooks and bakers about things. Facebook and Instagram are really not suitable media for engaging in (lengthy) conversations sadly neither are the EYB forums. There do not appear to be any Discourse based cooking/baking communities, which is a shame as I use Discourse-based installations for both professional and hobbyist discussions on other topics. Twitter similarly is not really an appropriate platform; notwithstanding its current commercial/technical issues.

Mastadon appears to be a better environment but again I cannot find any baking/cooking specific hangouts although there have been some discussions in the original mastadon.social. The opportunity to engage in conversation with like-minded cooks/bakers could be lost in the morass of other discussions. Therefore wondering if anyone else is using Mastadon for food related discussions and if so on which Mastadon server?

With all the medical issues within my household — mentioned in various previous post in these foruma — I am not in position to host either Discourse or Mastadon servers myself.

The website Hungry Onion has ongoing discussions about cooking, cookbooks, food, restaurants etc. They have Cookbook of the Month going there too, in which people cook from one book and compare notes. That might be an option for you.

Thanks for the recommendation. Certainly could be an option and one where I do not have to learn yet another set of commands to use it because it is Discourse-based becoming number 17 or 18 in my collection. It will not replace EYB but be an adjunct to here.

I am on Mastodon, and am hoping that EYB's will get an account there real soon - Jane?

There have been a couple of food-related servers but one of the most active ones shut down a few months ago. There is still an Epicure server that is active, I think.

Mostly foodies run their accounts from whichever server meets their other needs. I am on a local Australian one (mastodon.au, with a backup account on au.social) and have gradually built up a small foodie following. But my impression is that most of the fabulous Twitter food folks went to Instagram. There are active bakers there (I am not a baker so don't follow the threads), and there may be baker-related groups - or you could establish one yourself - they don't need moderation so don't have any overhead.

I would love to see more foodies on Mastodon, no matter which server.

I am also on Mastodon (@babka.social) and can find other foodies via hashtags such as #Foodie, #baking, #vegetarian, etc., and then follow users that way.

I have only Twitter (although not using it as much anymore) and Mastodon, so I don't use Instagram. I don't have the bandwidth to follow so many social media accounts.

I, too, hope EYB will get an account on Mastodon at some point.
