What social media do you use?   Go to last post Go to last unread

With all the current turmoil at Twitter (or rather X) I am interested to know what social media our members use. We have started an account at Threads and we will be posting on there from tomorrow (eatyourbookswebsite, the same as our Instagram). For now Threads is an app only though the hope is they will add a desktop version soon.

With the exodus from Twitter/X growing daily, what other platforms are our members using? We have links to all our social media on the Home Page (bottom right on desktop, at bottom on a phone).

I use:
- Facebook (mostly to keep in touch with friends from around the world)
- Instagram (originally to post photos, now it’s a bit of everything)
- Twitter (just to read rather than post) but probably not for much longer
- Mastodon - but there isn’t much on it!

Can’t say I’m that enthusiastic about joining Threads and I’m debating reducing my social media activity to just Facebook and Instagram.

  • Facebook for keeping in touch with friends who once used email for well thought out nuanced discussions rather than the typebite format of Facebook. Also follow Green politics and anyone who pokes fund at the Tories

  • Twitter for responding with laughter to Tory politicians trying to justify their party's latest High Court ruled unlawful actions (but is it going to survive the Muskas touch?)

  • Mastadon for … nothing as yet because I cannot find a home federated server that focuses on baking in all its forms

  • UK Broadsheet comments section for criticising UK politicians; I consider such comment section as a form of social media

  • Discourse based "communities" ranging from Meta Discourse and Docker through support forums for programs/apps and programming languages to maps to food and OpenAi's ChatGPT support with currently 20 of them open

  • EYB forums

  • Instagram is where I hang out most. Three classes to my following:

  1. Bakers, patisseries, chefs for inspiration (includung EYB and amateurs who cook the books)

  2. Dog/cat owners; several members of my household — including me — are allergic to cats but others would love to have a pet this is a compromise

  3. Reliable news agencies; principally BBC News

  4. Green Party England Wales and their elected policitans

  5. Refuse all requests to follow noobs and suspicious account

  6. Report all adverts as spam because A/S/L are not sufficient criteria

  7. Decline all "suggestions" that Instagram add to my stream halting them for 30 days

Ultimately Instagram is for me a place to pick up ideas, observe trends and occasionally risk posting my own ventures in baking. I do not want my stream turned into a clone of the stinking morass known as Facebook/Twitter/X.

Although Instagram don't like me. In the last two months my account has been suspended four times for breaches of their terms and conditions. No evidence of what those breaches are; they summararily act as law enforcement/judge/jury/executioners. I was reactived after the third suspenstion only to be suspended 24 huours later with their claim of breaches! I am now back and for a week and more have not been suspended.

However with theI last suspension ended I think what they are claiming as breaches of Ts&Cs by using a "bot" is me rapidly skipping over boring or visual perception disturbing stories by my repeated pressing od the right cursur key. If I'm correct then the only way to placate them is let such boring and disturbing sotries play out which with so many accounts on my follow list takes about 40 mintues a time. But in the main great bakers/patisseries/chefs make awful photographers.

I joined but have no idea what it is meant to be other than, i think, a knee-jerk response to help Musk's agenda of destrying Twitter/X.

I try to keep things simple when it comes to social media. I still have Facebook but don't really have much time for it. I'll check the notifications from time to time, but I think I miss a lot/most of my friends' posts. All of my Facebook friends are people that I'm aquainted with in real life. I don't accept friend requests from strangers.

And then this year, finally, after many years of resistance, I joined Twitter (mostly because I wanted to get horse racing news). I enjoy reading the feed during my commute, but I get notifications for accounts that I'm not following (mostly people who are dying from cancer or had someone close to them die from it), which is very annoying. I don't have cancer. I don't have a particular interest in it. I mean, I'm sorry that your kid died, but who are you? It's weird. I guess it's the algorithm. So it's a little upsetting that I finally relented (after all these years) and signed up for Twitter, and now the platform is changing so suddenly and so drastically.

That's about it for me. I can't think of anything else. In terms of food, I'm happy with EYB and finally have become comfortable enough with my phone's camera to start posting photos in addition to recipe notes.

And as far as entertainment goes, for years now I have been using a site that was called RateYourMusic.com but also added films about a decade in--so I use that to rate and keep track of movies that I have seen and/or want to see. I used to read the forums too but don't have time for that any more.

I don't know what Mastodon is. If it's food-centric, I'll have to look into it. And this is also the first time I've heard of Threads. (As you can tell, I try to keep social media accounts to a minimum.)

I created accounts on Post.news, Spoutible, and mastodon.social, but so far none of them has enough mass to make it worthwhile to browse on a regular basis. Over the years I have siloed various social media: I mainly use Twitter for political & scientific news, Instagram for cooking/baking and architecture posts, and Facebook to keep up with friends who live far away. I've avoided Tiktok for security reasons and am not joining Threads yet for similar reasons (and because I'm already on 2/3 of Zuckerberg's platforms). Someone needs to create a cooking/baking only social media app!

I'm active on the app formerly known as Twitter, probably until it dies. (I read the EYB feed there via my list of food/cooking accounts.} But many of the people I follow and interact with on Twitter have also started accounts at BlueSky, which has a desktop (bsky.app) and app version; it's in beta and still requires an invitation from a current member. If you're interested I'll probably have an invitation to offer you soon.

I'm on Pinterest but use it only for organizing images, no interactions. I have extensive food & cooking & book-related boards, and many of those pins link to online recipes or articles.

[Edited to add:] Corrected BlueSky url.

I’ve never done a lot of social media; I don’t do Facebook and although I’m on Twitter, I look at it infrequently. I used to like Instagram but recently I’ve found it quite lacklustre so I check it about once a week or less. I am not going to add any others (Threads, blue sky, etc)
I am on Mastadon, and I quite like it, but it doesn’t seem to have a critical mass as of yet.
One site I do check daily is Eat Your Books…it’s better than any social media imo.

About 5 min weekly on Facebook the last few years. No twitter, instagram, tiktok, or others except youtube. I spend most of my time on youtube as many of my favorite chefs in Japan are very active on the site and I love the easy recipes presented by them. I can watch for hours and many are great about replying. I also do lots of cooking lately from their youtube channels. Do not watch any food network or other food related TV programs such as Great British Baking show.

I'm part of a "what's app" group of 9 of us who went through high school together and EYB..... and that's it :)

Mostly instagram, and occasionally twitter because news seems to break there before anywhere else. I barely ever go on FB. TBH I liked instagram much more before FB bought it and decided they would keep changing it every two seconds. Zero interest in Threads for me because I dislike Meta in general

yes, I also dislike Meta and do not trust Google much either, hence do not use their browser.

I would have said that I don't use any social media, but was informed by my son that podcasts and blogs are considered social media, too. So I do follow several blogs, mostly about dogs and behavior, I try to listen to a bunch of podcasts, again mostly dog/training related, but Splendid Table is a favorite.
With decent internet finally available, I have been binging youtube: Pasta Grannys and Tasting History, for instance. But I don't log in and I don't follow anyone.

Because I do not like using social media like Facebook, instagram etc is why I do not like signing up for your giveaways using raffle something.

#17 Posted : Friday, July 28, 2023 10:35:42 AM(UTC)
I use Facebook, sometimes Instagram and Reddit.

None!
#19 Posted : Friday, July 28, 2023 3:47:38 PM(UTC)
Instagram- maybe 5 to 10 minutes a week.
Facebook - ditto
Spoutible- set up an account, rarely visit
Twitter/x - cancelled when the musk madness heated up

Other social media sites are topic specific - crafting, books.

I have no idea what to join, or even if I should bother. Things seem fine as is for me.

I really like Post, and check it twice a day. It has a good feel to it. I also like that you can tip people if you like their post, and purchase content from newspapers and the like directly in the app. I'm also on IG and FB, but I don't really use the former and don't really like using the latter.

Nah we all already have a suitable app on our mobile devices — it's called the web browser.

Apps are nothing more than a restricted web browser that restricts what users can do; primarily preventing the use of ad blockers, tracker breakers, and cookie cutters.

What we need is a web-based forum site where we can discuss cooking/baking … oh wait we have one, it's called EYB.
