A minor annoyance in a recipe   Go to last post Go to last unread

Perhaps the recipe originally called for 340g of pasta; a quantity that does not provoke upping to 500g. As a European I much prefer metric to Imperial measurements (even to the point of weighing 1tsp of salt to convert it to grammes..

I genuinely don’t understand why it’s a problem - when cooking pasta I use enough for the number of portions I intend to make, so depending on who’s eating and what else goes in, the amount is variable , and not related to the pack size (usually 500g here in the U.K. but not always)

Some pasta shapes (farfalle, for example) seem to be sold 12oz/box as the standard size? I know that a lot of the most common shapes (penne, rotini, etc) are 16oz/box, but maybe the recipes in question were developed with a view to using one of the “fancier” pasta shapes?

If a recipe calls for 12 oz, I’ll usually cook the entire 16 oz of pasta, scoop out a quarter of it before using the rest for the recipe, and save the extra 4 oz in a Tupperware for the next time someone just wants a single serving of pasta that they’ll throw something on. Lunch for work, picky 11-year-old who doesn’t want to eat what everyone else is eating, quick dinner for a busy night when everyone is just foraging for their own thing….you get the idea.
