KitchenAid Stand Mixer Issue   Go to last post Go to last unread

The stainless steel bowl of my KitchenAid Artisan stand mixer (the tilt head style with the twist lock bowl) is jamming in place nearly every time I use the mixer. Today, mixing bread dough, I had to resort to bashing the bowl handle with a rubber mallet to remove it from the mixer. Neither the bowl nor the mixer has ever suffered any damage that might have caused this behavior. And I’m not tightening down the bowl with gorilla strength.

Has anyone else run into this, and do you have a solution? I’m considering trying oiling the foot of the bowl and receiver plate before use to see if that helps — cooking oil of course, so there is no chance of food contamination.

This is from Kitchen Aid's web page

Use a warm compress

  1. Place a wet, warm towel around the bottom of the bowl for 10 minutes.

  2. Re-warm it after the 10 minutes, put it on again, and let it sit for another 1-2 minutes. This will re-warm the stainless steel, causing it to expand. After this time, try to wiggle and remove the bowl.

I guess the problem with the KitchenAid really will only happen with dense/heavy things, where the rotation of the drive is in the tightening direction, and the friction of the contents against the bowl carry it along.

I’ll be making bread again soon, and I’ll let you know if oiling the bowl and plate helps.

Just a thought... are you using enough water in your dough? If the problem mainly happens when mixing stiff things, it sounds like the dough might be too stiff. I mostly use my Kitchenaid for bread dough and this problem has never happened.

I have followed this discussion carefully because I have had the opposite problem lately...certain large quantities of dough that I've been kneading with dough hook (that have never been a problem before) have caused my kitchen aid bowl to come loose!!  I looked into replacing the actual bowl but I don't think that is the answer....and I know that I am making doughs with the correct hydration as I have made them for years prior to the problem starting etc.
