Questions to book owners   Go to last post Go to last unread

If you have a question about a book, is it possible to ask someone who owns it? For example, I want to know if this book uses grams or cups: https://www.eatyourbooks...k-recipes-and-techniques

If it isn't currently possible to do this, would you consider making this a feature?

Could be a useful feature. But I have developed some tricks to find out.

Checking the books "More details" should show where it was published. For example, the book that you cite was published in the US and there it is most likely to use cups for measures.

You could also use the "Buy book" option to get you to Amazon and there, if it is available, use Look Inside. Sadly that peek usually only shows the first few pages and does not reach the recipes themselves although if there is a Surprise Me option in the contents list one might be lucky to be shown a recipe.

For the specific book you linked to the Look inside shows that the author/publisher uses both cups/tsp and grams. Also that temperatures are in Fahrenheit and Celsius.

A final technique is to look up the different measures in another recipe book. Often included as an appendix or in the front matter of those other books. One of the web search engines could be used as an online convertor.

All a bit of a faff. If only everyone use the metric system there would be no need for all this messing about.

Thanks for replying so quickly. I noticed that the book was published in the US but some American books do use grams and others don't. I tried Amazon but there was no option to look inside. Another option would be to download a free sample of the kindle version. As you said, all a bit of a faff.

There might be other circumstances where only owners would have the answer, for example, does the naan bread recipe use a hob or oven, does the sourdough recipe explain how to make a poolish or is it a quicker version? This kind of info might help you to decide whether to buy the book or not. I think an option to post questions about books would be useful.

Maxineanna - if you post your question about a book with the book title in the subject then hopefully someone who owns the book will answer. Probably the best Forum section is Book recommendations.

Weird bacause like you (according to your profile) I too am in the UK and there was definitely a Look inside option on Amazon.co.uk for this book.

I had another look and there is no option to look inside (I tried the app and website). My husband looked too but he got the same. I tried on my mobile and tablet, neither had the look inside option. Can you please  post a link?

My kindle book shows both which is really useful.

Very strange! I see a "Look inside" button immediately below the cover picture that Amazon.co.uk is showing.

As Jane said...I'm  100% sure if you posted a forum question about a specific book....you would get member answers very quickly.  That has certainly been my experience on this site :)

In reply to original query - it looks like its imperial (ounces) with metric (grams) conversions, using both weights and cups/mls from an online "look inside" function from Australia's The Leaf Bookstore.

His own web site has a "look inside" function.. but without any "look inside" function for that particular book.
