As I face the reality of being dairy intolerant I would love members suggestions on non-dairy products you like. I have found milk and butter products I like, but am struggling with yogurt, sour cream and cheeses. I love the Trader Joe’s vegan whipping cream. Has anyone found a really good substitution for buttermilk? The non dairy milks plus vinegar are a lot thinner than buttermilk. Anyone found a non dairy cheese that really melts? I’m in the Seattle area, so have Kroeger, Safeway, Costco, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods and PCC (local co op). Any suggestions are welcomed.

I went through a vegan period and tried a lot of stuff.

Most fake cheese is fat and starch without the protein found in cheese. The best fake cheeses are nut-based, usually cashews or almonds. Tofutti has good fake sour cream. Ice cream is pretty reliable but the best are coconut based. I like the Almond Reddi whip in a can but it deflates quickly.

The thing I still carry with me is the substitute for cheese in pizza. I order a pacific veggie pizza from Domino’s or any other veggie pizza with red sauce and no cheese. I drizzle it with tahini before eating. This, to me, is better than mozzarella.

For anything creamy, I can highly recommend the two cookbooks from the Millennium restaurant:

The Millennium Cookbook: Extraordinary Vegetarian Cuisine

The Artful Vegan: Fresh Flavors From the Millennium Restaurant

I’m an omnivore, but Millennium was a favorite restaurant when it was in the theatre district of San Francisco; it has since moved to Oakland, and a bit off the beaten track at that. But all their creamy dishes were fantastic. I really miss their cardamom ice cream.

I am not sure if you are into making things yourself, but if so, these books are worth investigating:

Vegan at Home: Recipes for a Modern Plant-Based Lifestyle

The Homemade Vegan Pantry: The Art of Making Your Own Staples

Both have melty cheese, sour cream and yoghurt.

I have found non dairy yougurt and sour cream that I really like.  The brand is Forager.  It is cashew and coconut based.  The Elements of Baking has a great substitution for buttermilk.

I'm still on a quest for non dairy cheeses.  So fair I haven't been willing to make my own.
