We just had a dish that turned out good and we mentioned to each other that we would certainly cook this again. The problem with these commitments is that over time we forget. The next thing we know it's been two or three years and we stumble across the recipe in a binder or 3x5 card and ask ourselves; Why haven't we made this?

We can keep a list, but over time it becomes long and unwieldly. Utlimately the list can become unmaintainable.

I have been pondering the problem and thought I would throw out an idea for EYB.

If we have a recipe bookmark; "I would Cook This Again", a last cooked date (MM/YY), and a parameter, number of months, we could have the recipe show up in a view in the future.

We could mark the recipe as "I Would Cook This Again", last cooked date of 03/25, and enter the number months; say 6 months.

We would have a view for recipes "I Would Cook This Again" where the number of months exceed the last cooked date.

If we do not wish to see the recipe in the view at the moment we can change the number of months, or remove the number of months, in which case it will no longer show in the view.

The view could be sorted from the longest number of months to fewest number of months

Just an idea. Any thoughts?

I think that is a great idea.

Like the idea.

I do basically the same thing using the Favorites bookmark on EYB. Sometimes I'll use a random number generator (I'm obsessed with RNGs) to pick a random "favorite" recipe. EYB also has the ability to add the month/year that you cooked this, so when I cook something I love I check both the boxes "I've cooked this" and "Favorites".

Love this idea.

I do exactly what Acarroll does, including use of a random number generator. That way I can see which recipes from a specific month/year won a coveted "Favorites" bookmark. I recall that there's consideration of building an RNG into an umpcoming new version of EYB's "sort by," which would be wonderful.

I use Favourites too, and also have a bookmark/tag for the year and another for the month. So if I want to see what I liked from March (any year) I can select that bookmark and Favourites. If I want to see what I liked from March last year, then I also add the 2024 bookmark.

I thought about favorites. In my mind I hold favorites for those very special dishes. Usually holiday dishes. I Would Cook This Again, at least for me, is broader and contains a larger collection of recipes. I also thought about year and month bookmarks, but feel I would have a difficult time maintaining so many bookmarks for each recipe I would be interested in. My hats off to all of those who can make that combination work.

I have the opposite- a bookmark 'do not repeat' and also 'XXX Disaster'. Both fortunately have very few recipes. And I forgot about my bookmark 'do not make this'. Only five recipes and I have no recollection of tagging them this way.

I have a recipe spreadsheet with a category of "I Would Never Cook This Again". I do have recipes tagged. Mostly mundane casseroles, sheet pan dishes, and other "quick and easy" things, including a number of mediocre crock-pot recipes.

This is a great idea! We're working hard on building out the app right now, and as part of that thinking through different ways to track your cooking. Having a way to mark not only whether something is cooked, but whether you'd cook it again makes a lot of sense. It's definitely something we want to build at some point.
