Collector's Guilt?   Go to last post Go to last unread

No guilt whatsoever.  We all should have things we love and love to do.

I figure that if I can cook even one amazing meal out of a cookbook, it is usually cheaper than going out for a fancy dinner. I also like to justify my cookbook collection by thinking that whether the books are cooked from or not I enjoy reading them. Most collections are never actually "used" if you think about it.  Stamp collections will never be used to send mail and coin collections will never be used to purchase anything.

Collector's guilt? You bet. That's why I joined EYB.

Every time I hear the parable of the rich fool, I think of my cookbooks.

Collector's guilt?? Used to until I found this site! Now, only briefly until I sit and enjoy reading it. My brother recently visited and commented on my collection (comparatively small at around 300 plus all those community cookbooks I can't resist wherever I see them) asking if I really thought I'd cook from all of them. I looked at him in disbelief and said yes...no...maybe! And that's the point isn't it. ..the lure, the quest for that next great recipe! And guess where I find him when he visits? Sitting with one of my books in hand. I told him I found "my people" here on this site lol!

and of course, here in Brisbane it's almost the life line pre-loved book fest fund raiser - a great cookery section that's always hard to resist.. so getting ready to add to the shelves.. husband keeps suggesting I dispose of one for every one I buy .. told him I'd do the same with his "tools"...

EYB is my cook book life line!!

LOL I came back with almost the same response to my dad when he questioned the number of small appliances and gadgets in my kitchen. He got rid of his dining room, converted it to a kitchen, and converted what had been the kitchen into a workshop with a drill press, lathe, engine hoist, 3 huge tool chests, an 8' workbench and floor to ceiling cabinets, but I have too many spatulas?

Where does he eat? Standing up in the kitchen?

I used to feel guilty, and sometimes still do, but many people have collections, so why shouldn’t I have one? I feel more guilty about the amount of perfumes I have. As I build my collection, however, I find myself being interested in less and less books. So many now seem too much like something else I have. Someone earlier said about almost tasting the recipe as you read it, and I have that experience too. The pleasure in having the cookbooks is in more than just making the recipe.

I do have collector's guilt. I especially did when my husband was alive. After he passed away last year I got more out of control because I had nobody saying "Another cookbook?" I am moving soon, and have been trying to weed some out. But I truly love my cookbooks, even though I don't use a lot of them very much. They are coming with me!

One fantasy that drives cookbook collecting (or at least cookbook amassing) is the hope that the next cookbook will have THE recipe, the recipe that fulfills your gastronomic hopes, the one that will wow you and all your relatives and friends, the one you will make over and over for the rest of your life because it's so awesome. That's the fantasy.

That usually happens before you thoroughly know your existing recipe collection, at least the part of your collection not indexed in EYB, where, for all you know, THE recipe may be hiding.

But whether or not you find THE recipe, two things are certain: if the books you amass are print books, they'll pile up; and with any format, the expense of acquiring them will pile up.

Don't think I'm putting down any of you. What I have just described is my own experience, which I think some other EYBers may recognize.

Such lovely comments! I can identify with you all, though I have only just over a hundred cookbooks! Yes, I do feel guilty, but I now try to do the 'one in one out' rule, and I buy from thrift shops much of the time. I simply love browsing through and imagining what the recipes wouls taste like, pr seeing how I can update a favourite. It's a huge wrench giving them back to the thrift shops, though, when I run out of bookshelf space and feel the need for a 'cull', but I remember the pleasure I had when I first found whatever the book was, and feel good that someone else will feel that pleasure. I find only about 50% of my collection is indexed, though, so that's frustrating. I think that I'm always searching for the perfect book, of course - the one that has so many of my kind of recipes that I'll never neeed another... until I spot something else and I am enticed anew! Unless I sneak them in when he's not here, my husband always says "Not ANOTHER" cookbook!? But he indulges me and puts up another shelf...

I have over 1,900, all catalogued on Librarything. I just joined EYB to help improve my use of my books, although many are not on EYB. I do not feel bad about my collection, as we regularly cook from them. I am wondering how avid book collectors like kindle cookbooks. If you like kindle, which version are you using?

I am not a fan of eBooks except within computer tools or books that I'll only use rarely and for reference. So, no, my large collection is all physical.

I have about 300 kindle books now. They are just fine and I like using my ipad for reading so it goes with me everywhere ie doctor’s appts, traveling, etc. I now only buy older books in print and newer in kindle format only. I buy on average 6-7 Japanese language cookbooks via Amazon Japan. Although they are also in kindle format I am unable to buy kindle format because I live in the US. Not sure what version kindle because I have my ipad set to update automatically. I have decided to cull newer saveur magazines because I am running out of space and no longer interested in some of the magazines esp newer Saveur. I will not renew saveur and bon appetit.

I like collecting e-format cookbooks because they take up less space in my not-large house. I find them on Barnes & Noble after reading the Kindle list on eatyourbooks. The trick to finding the Barnes and Noble cookbook deals is to click on nookbooks, then special deals, then under five dollars, then subject. The specials are usually the same there as on Amazon. I read them on my iPad, my phone, and my nook, which has a light for at night but doesn’t have the bright screen that keeps you awake or hurts the eyes. (I like Barnes & Noble better than Amazon because of their treatment of employees and their support of publishing in general.) I read the e-books before bed and in the car, but a lot of times in the house I just sit and look at the hardbound books. So far my collection isn’t out of control, although my husband laughs at me.

I love to read in general, and I think publishers are creating their most beautiful books in the cookbook category. The production value is really over the top and beautiful, with all the pictures.

I like what somebody said about being able to taste recipes as they read them; I think more and more that’s true for me and I really enjoy it. Having all these cookbooks come into my life recently has improved my cooking a lot. A few years ago, I was into cooking much more simply and I have the confidence to to attack more complicated recipes. The international cookbooks, especially the Middle Eastern cookbooks, are incredible and have changed my cooking entirely.

Hello Lnbrittain. Thank you very much for the hint on barnes and noble. I got far as $5 deals but only subject matter I see are kids, fiction, and mystery. Can you please help?

Hi, sure!

Here's the under $5.00 cookbook section:

The cookbooks are in the last row, on the far right—at least on desktop.

All the best!

I see it now. Thank you.

When one of my favorite cookbooks was worn to tatters, it was o.p. in print but available as an ebook. So that is how I got my first (and so far, only) e-cookbook. It is not yet on my bookshelf.

@bittrette
I’m curious, which ebook did you get? 😊
