Where do you keep all your books?   Go to last post Go to last unread

Hi. I've seen there is someone who owns nearly 10000 books and I was wondering where do they keep them all. I've given up "real books" ages ago, after my husband threatened me to leave if I didn't put a stop to buying books but then, thankfully, iPad and similar came to life and I started to buy ebooks. Still, you need a lot of storage for 10000 books and there's always the risk of loosing them all in once. What trick do you use, if any?

Thanks šŸ¤—

I don't have 10,000 but 3,500 is still a lot to store. And yes, it is a problem. I have a fantasy that my next move will be to a house with a library with floor to ceiling shelves where all my books can be stored in one place. But now in the real world they are in different places around my house. I have floor to ceiling bookshelves in my kitchen/diner (at the opposite end to cooking so they don't get affected by moisture). Those are my 600 or so "favorites". Those do get swapped out as I get new books I want to use regularly.

In my office I have several hundred reference, food writing and restaurant books. And then the rest of my collection is in my basement (it's dry) where I have lots of bookshelves. But those shelves are now full and I keep getting more books. So I'm now entering hoarder stage where I have piles and boxes of books. I really should prune but as long as I have my fantasy library in sight I'm not going to!

Even if they're not 10,000, 3,500 is still a lot of books and you must have quite a house šŸ˜ So of course you prefer real books.. having room I would prefer them too but piles and boxes of books would not be possible in my case because I don't have a basement and my son suffer a very severe dust allergy. I do have a fantasy library too but I'm afraid it will remain a fantasy šŸ˜¬

No, it's not a big house - 1,600 sq ft. But the cookbooks are a major part of it!

I really do not know how many books I own.  What it shows here 2899 but that includes over 780 kindle books and I suppose ckbk books.  But, I own much more than that because I think I have over 700 or so books in English language not counted in EYB as well as over 1000-1300 Japanese language cookbooks not counted in EYB.  Fortunately Japanese cookbboks tend to be much thinner due to house sizes in Japan.

i have one bedroom I use as my own study and have half the books there.  Other 50% are in entryway with big bookcases on the wall leading to our living room along with builtin separating two areas.   And our house is not big compared to most houses in the neighborhood.  I am slowly culling magazines though.  I try to buy English language cookbooks now in kindle format due to lack of space but with Japanese language cookbooks, Amazon won't allow kindle books outside of prmary country.

My husband has never complained about my books because he loves all the food that comes out of our kitchen.  Plus, he has built a separate structure  behind our detached garage for his model trains and handmade layouts which is his passion.  We both have our own passions and it works for us.

My husband built a double bed for me (we sleep in separate rooms for medical reasons) which is a large box with a mattress on top. It is quite high and hold a lot of books. It makes it difficult to get them in and out, a two person job, but does provide a storage place until the fantasy house arrives. The rest are in floor to ceiling bookcases, also in the bedroom. They are starting to pile up again in other places, 'tho, so many wonderful books have been published.

Years ago I asked for IKEA bookcases with glass doors for Christmas for my cookbooks and some knickknacks I wanted to display.  At our old house these filled one wall floor to ceiling in a spare bedroom.  I also had a long lower 2-shelf bookcase in the dining room with cookbooks.  Now in our current home the tall bookshelves fit along a really wide hallway adjacent to the dining room and next to the kitchen.  The lower bookcases fit perfectly in the dining room which only has a half wall between it and the hallway.  It works perfectly for me because I can pull out cookbooks or cooking magazines and spread them out on the dining room table to browse and I am right next to the kitchen.  Of course the knickknacks are long gone as more cookbooks arrived and needed the space but I don't miss them.

Only 1,361 cookbooks in EYB, at least until today's delivery with four more. The books are stored on Bookshelves, in boxes, and stacks on top of boxes. For the cookbooks in boxes I've numbered the boxes and bookmarked which cookbooks are in each of the boxes.

My collection is modest, but one of my COVID lockdown projects was getting mine under control, which was accomplished by installing a 7 foot tall IKEA Billy at the end of my kitchen counter, in a dead spot before a window. That is essentially full, although there are a few home repair/improvement and gardening books that will eventually be displaced.

My space limitations and a change in lifestyle are mutually driving me to mostly purchase digital versions at this point. Iā€™m retired and spending about 2-3 months a year away from my home and visiting family. To the extent possible, I like to have my recipes with me. Practically speaking, in most cases, this means copying favorite recipes into my own digital cookbook. I like to have my cookbooks with me. But moving forward, I am purchasing most of my books digitally.

Were publishers to create a reasonably affordable way to acquire digital versions of my print cookbooks, I would do it.

I've also got a more modest collection of about 300 cookbooks including about 100 kindle books. I created a bookmark for all my kindle books so I can see what I have when I'm away from home. For my physical books I store them in different places in my small house based on how often I use them. My most frequently used books are in the kitchen/dining room with the lesser used books in 3 other locations. I don't buy a lot of physical books these days because I've completely run out of space for them...my one exception is the new Ottolenghi book which I will be getting when I see him in October.

As with others I have a mix of ebooks and physical books but with the latter I think I have around 1400. Most rooms have at least a bookshelf/case and I've got an office/study which is mainly dedicated to cookbooks. I'm now much more careful on which physical books I buy especially as ebooks can be had for 99p.

I have a collection of nearly 900 physical books and around 200 digital ones. Many of them aren´t listed on Eat Your Books (EYB) due to the language, as my collection includes books primarily in Spanish, Catalan, French, and German. Most of these are stored in a single room in my home.
