This week's roundup is about lost recipes. I'm creating this topic so that members might share any dishes they are trying to recreate - in so that other members can help them with ideas and more. Recipe name, time period that the recipe was created, what you remember about the dish etc. Was it from a book, magazine, label, television show etc. This may be a fun project to keep going. I searched for past posts on this topic and found one.

Clicking on that link comes up with an "Access Denied"

Hi Jenny,
Great idea! I'd love to start: in the 50s, my mother, who wasn't a great cook, used to make a wonderful pineapple upside down cake. The topping was pretty standard but the batter she made was from a recipe called "cottage pudding" and it was a never fail kind of recipe. Anyone have any ideas?

Hi, I used to listen to a show on the radio in Boston, hosted by Gus Saunders, called Yankee Kitchen and I enjoyed so many of the authentic tried and true Yankee recipes. I just wish I kept them or written them down. Has anyone ever heard of it? It was in the 80’s.

Hello, Peg, I found this recipe for pineapple upside-down cake using cottage pudding. I hope this helps.

Hello, I wanted to respond to your thread. I had not heard of Mr. Saunders or the Yankee Kitchen, however, I found this on search forum:

This guy was a fan also and he has 6 of the cookbooks from Yankee Kitchen. He says he will send any recipes that you might be interested in. Good luck!

Idea 1- even a change of one ingredient can be the key. My Tater Tot Casserole was never "right" until I asked my Mom for Grandma's version of the recipe. Turns out the key was using canned Cream of CHICKEN soup for the sauce.

Idea 2- On the (now closed) Chowhound cooking site there were a lot of requests for recipes from magazines no longer published, especially Bon Appetit, when recipes were not available anywhere online. Often the requester could describe the magazine cover and approximate year(s). I'm not sure whether the site backissues.com is still in business since my attempts to access it aren't working today. But that or similar sites which feature thumbnails of magazine covers can be a great resource for narrowing down your search.

My goto site for these things is https://archive.org/ which has many back issues of magazines online.  They appear to have (some) issues of Bon Appetit in particular.

I also make considerable of their Internet Wayback Machine to find defunct websites, which by the way finds the backissues.com site with the last capture from August 2022.

It took me a little bit of trial and error, but I managed to recreate my grandfather's roast beef and Yorkshire pudding that he made on Sundays when I was growing up. He was the first of his family to be born in the US, as his parents were both from England. For those of you who may not know about Yorkshire pudding, it is a popover-style bread made with thick batter and the drippings from the roast.

Smells and tastes from childhood are strong memory keepers. Looking forward to seeing what gets posted in this topic!

Too bad about Chowhound. I tried to save the Chowhound pages I'd bookmarked by downloading them, but Chowhound, or whoever, reached right into my Android device and erased them. Should have committed them to paper.
The Internet Archive isn't working for me today - I'm getting nothing but error messages.

This time, a recipe found: a recipe for vegetarian chili in one of my little "Betty Crockers."

Yes I used to listen religiously. I had so many recipes that I had to throw a lot of them out!

Upside Down Cake - Diane Holuigue Looking for a recipe ; Australians EYBers might be able to help. A Diane Holuigue recipe, published in The Australian in the 90’s. I’ve lost my cutting, and googling hasn’t helped. It’s possibly reproduced in her Clever Cooks compilations but I’ve not been able to find copies to look. The topping was of Christmas cake style macerated fruits, recommended to be served w sour cream/creme fraiche.

Oh gosh. When I was in college I had a cookbook (I can't even remember the genre) but it had such a great frittata recipe that I've been thinking about for over a decade. It was Mexican-inspired (not a Mexican cookbook though) - I know it had canned green chiles, lots of cheese, and shredded hash browns. I don't recall any meat in it. I wish I could find that recipe again.

Did this have frozen hashed browns?  I see some with chilies, but will keep an eye out.

Cottage Pudding:

Sift together 1 3/4 cups flour, 2 1/2 tsp. Baking powder and a pinch of salt and set aside.
Cream together 1/4 cup melted butter,1 cup sugar, 1 egg and 1/2 tsp. Lemon extract.
Add the dry ingredients to batter alternately with 2/3 cup milk.
Pour into buttered 8 x 8 inch pan and bake in preheated 375 degree oven for 30 to 40 minutes.
