Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Croque monsieur toasts

    • Ro_ on July 15, 2021

Nice but not special enough to repeat.

  • Sandwich skewers

    • Ro_ on June 27, 2021

These were easy to make and a big hit with my guests. I bought crustless bread to make these. I did 2*salmon sandwiches and 1* cucumber per skewer, omitting the ham, and would do again.

  • Tiny pesto tartlets

    • Ro_ on July 16, 2020

Nice, easy. A good way to use up leftover bits like half a jar of pesto, bits of cheese, jar of roasted peppers etc - if you have some puff pastry that is!

  • Salmon and asparagus terrine

    • Ro_ on August 21, 2021

This was yummy, and although time consuming, not actually technically difficult. You could probably leave out the asparagus if you wanted.

  • Avocado, tomato and mint salad

    • Ro_ on September 18, 2020

Found this recipe when I was searching for a side salad to use up avocado and mint, and since I still have cherry tomatoes growing in the garden, this recipe was perfect. I really liked it, it's a bit of a different way to eat avocado and tomato than with the traditional mexican flavours. You could probably leave out the mint sauce if you don't have any, and maybe add some honey for sweetness instead.

  • Garlic mushroom bruschetta

    • Ro_ on September 21, 2021

I thought this was a little plain and "only OK". For me, I'd prefer it with a punch of saltiness, by adding something like jambon de bayonne, or blue cheese.

  • Thai-spiced tomato soup

    • Ro_ on May 27, 2021

A nice twist on tomato soup, and easy to make from mostly storecupboard ingredients plus some veg.

  • Cherry tomato and mozzarella salad

    • Ro_ on July 14, 2020

A very nice tomato salad. Particularly useful if you want to make a few hours ahead of serving or take to a friend's place, because I think the fact it uses cherry tomatoes makes it a little sturdier than a salad made of sliced regular tomatoes that would break down more quickly in the vinaigrette.

  • Lamb dhansak

    • JJ2018 on April 15, 2018

This is really nice but it is very mild - so would add more chilli to suit my taste

    • Ro_ on October 10, 2019

This is a great curry recipe for both curry lovers (due to lovely flavour and texture) but also people who might be a bit suspicious of more hardcore/traditional curries. Not too spicy, a nice sweet kick, none of the mustier flavours of some of the more obscure Indian spices and flavourings. And if you tell them it's a Mary Berry recipe they'll be more likely to give it the benefit of the doubt.

  • 15-minute pasta

    • Ro_ on June 17, 2020

I used serrano ham instead of parma ham, and played with the quantities of everything a bit according to what I had on hand and what seemed about right for two people. We both really enjoyed this pasta dish, which is worth repeating as it's so quick to put together (once you've cleaned the mushrooms).

  • Chargrilled citrus chicken breasts

    • Ro_ on October 23, 2019

The best thing about this was that the chicken stayed wonderfully moist. I cut each breast into about three strips to give nice chunky pieces. However, I found the overall taste overwhelmingly orangey and a bit sickly. Not sure if this is just my personal taste or not, but if I made it again I'd use a lot less orange juice/zest than directed.

  • Guinea fowl with wild mushroom sauce

    • Ro_ on May 25, 2021

Very nice sauce indeed, this almost makes it to my favourites list but not quite.

  • Salmon tranches with herb sauce, quail's eggs and asparagus

    • Ro_ on May 25, 2021

I just made the sauce, to serve with salmon mi-cuit. It was really delicious, I was worried about it being a cold sauce with semi cooked salmon but it wasn't an issue at all. It would also be lovely with smoked salmon.

  • Spring chicken with lemon and fennel

    • roleigh on June 26, 2020

I used more crème fraiche than specified, in order to use up the pot, and it was none the worse for it. It was delicious with some Austrian tarragon mustard that I had, and I wished I’d had some fresh tarragon to add to the recipe. Also, you can never add enough lemon zest. I cut the breasts into large pieces. For the leftovers, I added the cooked new potatoes to the stew before reheating portions for another meal. The potatoes made an excellent addition, a good vehicle for excess cooking (i.e. crème fraiche!).

  • Yorkshire pudding

    • Ro_ on May 25, 2021

Very nice tasting, but mine came out slightly overdone, would reduce cooking time slightly.

  • Fiery red rice and carrot salad

    • KiwiRose on July 27, 2022

This is delicious. Best made with fresh limes not lime juice. I've made it with black rice successfully: it's hard to find red rice in New Zealand.

    • Ro_ on October 10, 2019

Perfect for a buffet or barbecue: unusual salad with a delicious nutty, piquant taste. Looks pretty too.

  • Apple crumble with walnuts and sunflower seeds

    • JJ2018 on April 10, 2018

We did not like this - it just isn’t an apple crumble. Topping came out very dry - plenty was left over which is a rarity in this house

  • Warm chocolate fondant tart

    • Ro_ on January 01, 2021

I didn't make the pastry but used shop bought. Overall this was a nice tart, but since the chocolate is very heavy (and almost cakey since it's a fondant filling) I kind of thought I'd prefer just the chocolate on its own with some ice cream, I didn't really need the pastry.

  • Sultana and cranberry tray bake

    • foodywarrnambool on July 22, 2014

Something a little special and different for the school lunch box.

  • Chocolate and ginger flapjacks

    • Ro_ on July 12, 2020

I loved these, being a huge fan of chocolate and ginger as a flavour combination. Unfortunately my family all said they'd prefer them without the ginger!

  • Cranberry and white chocolate shortbread

    • JJ2018 on April 15, 2018

Nice but I found the shortbread really crumbly. Ended up baking in a tin as couldn’t get it to stick enough to roll out.
