Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Limeade

  • Corn bread

    • Bloominanglophile on October 23, 2013

I gave this 4 stars back in 1995. Since then, Deborah Madison's cornbread recipe from Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone has become my go-to recipe.

  • Spritz

    • AreBe on January 02, 2012

These cookies are perfect morsels of buttery goodness.

  • Strawberry shortcake

    • Bloominanglophile on October 23, 2013

(1998) This makes one big shortcake that serves 8. However, I'm sure you could probably divide up the dough and cook for less time if you prefer individual shortcakes.

  • Mexicali pork chops

    • chawkins on July 10, 2013

I've had this cookbook for over 20 years and I always wanted to try this recipe. Well, I finally did and we could not stop eating the rice, bean and corn mixture, pretty tasty.

  • Creamy herbed pork chops

    • chawkins on June 11, 2014

My go to recipe for pork chops, quick and easy. You can also vary the herb used and get a slightly different take every time

  • Create-your-own meat loaf

    • Bloominanglophile on August 19, 2013

I have been making this meatloaf for almost my whole married life (20 years). Sure, there are fancier and more succulent versions out there, but this is in my honorary quick dinner file. As far as the options, I use soft bread crumbs, milk, fresh onion, celery, parsley, basil, oregano, ground beef, and I top the meat loaf with my "secret" meatloaf sauce--which is just ketchup mixed with Worcestershire sauce! Will serve 4, just not generously.

  • Five-cup salad

    • Bloominanglophile on October 23, 2013

This salad always made an appearance at holiday meals when I was growing up, except that we used canned fruit cocktail and mandarin oranges instead of pineapple chunks. A cliché dish, but sometimes one just has to honor tradition!

  • White sauce

    • Bloominanglophile on October 09, 2016

A good, basic recipe for white sauce (stovetop method).

  • Cheese sauce

    • Bloominanglophile on October 09, 2016

Very bland with the recommended Swiss cheese. They also recommend American, gruyere, or blue cheese. Whatever you decide to use, make sure it is a full-flavored cheese. It also said to omit the salt, but my attempt with the Swiss cheese needed it.

  • Hollandaise sauce

    • Bloominanglophile on October 23, 2013

I prefer a stronger lemon taste to my hollandaise.
