This book isn't brand new and I noticed a few recipes in which the author uses small amounts of spelt flour, which is not gluten-free. With a much wider array of gluten-free flours available these days, it should be possible to substitute one of those for the spelt flour. For those who don't need to avoid dairy products the author reminds us that butter can be substituted for the non-dairy margarine in the recipes, which will yield even more luscious results! Needless to say, these recipes are almost all suitable for kosher cooks and for Passover. Whether you have special dietary needs or just love the confections of Vienna and its empire, this book is for you!

A really outstanding book of flourless and dairy-free desserts! Although that makes this book very useful for those looking for gluten-free or lactose-free recipes, these are actually terrific recipes for sumptuous desserts from the Austro-Hungarian tradition, based almost entirely on the use of ground nuts instead of flour. The author has adapted some recipes or invented some to make use of nuts that aren't traditional in Austrian/Hungarian/Czech baking, like pecans, cashews, peanuts and Brazil nuts, but everything looks delicious and are clearly the work of someone steeped in the Central European tradition of tortes and schnitten!
