    The Black Forest cake was great, a bit time consuming. It is an exact replica of the version I used to make from the imported German Black Forest cake mix that Aldi used to carry that I have not been able to source for the last two years.

    I find Rick Rodgers' recipes rarely fail in execution in my home kitchen. The Hazelnut Gateau with Coffee Buttercream cake in this book was no exception. Yes, it took half the day to make, but there are no exotic ingredients and the result was a moist, subtly-flavored, and well-balanced cake. The cake itself was easy to handle during slicing and icing, and the buttercream recipe with egg whites was a marvel. (Although it did make MUCH MORE icing than needed -- I'd say double the amount. #fridayrecipenight
