Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Melon & blue cheese salad with citrus dressing

    • Melyinoz on January 09, 2022

This was lovely. The dressing was delicious by itself, but I couldn’t taste it in the salad. I think this was because my melon was so ripe and perfumed.

  • Citrus dressing

    • Melyinoz on January 28, 2022

      Lovely dressing.

  • Beef fillet with beetroot and goat's cheese dressing

    • e_ballad on December 17, 2017

There’s nothing especially notable about the beef & beetroot components as these are simply roasted, but the goat cheese dressing really brings the dish together. Incidentally, this same dressing was fantastic to dress hot potatoes! Yum.

  • Chargrilled swordfish with tomatoes and olives

    • treay on January 08, 2025

This recipe is one of the best we've ever had in a long time. It was amazingly delicious! You cook some onion, garlic, chilli, cherry tomatoes and some herbs and then add some vinegar, olives and capers. It has all the Mediterranean flavours I love. Add the potatoes and you have a very fancy fish and chips. I also added an eggplant from our garden. I could eat it everyday....

  • Hot and fiery hummus

    • Melyinoz on January 23, 2022

This was nice. I appreciated a hummus recipe that is made from walnuts instead of tahini. It made a lot. I skimped a little on the chilli and wished I hadn’t.

  • Taleggio, pea and pancetta pasta bake

    • treay on November 28, 2024

A few weeks ago I bought two packets of conchiglioni, large pasta shells by mistake when doing my online shopping. I have been trying to use them for a while, but couldn't find a recipe I liked. I bought some second-hand books a few days ago and while going through the recipes I found this one. We had a friend for dinner last night, and it was the perfect time to make it. I have to say that we really enjoyed it, and have plenty leftovers to probably freeze for another day.

  • Crisp stir-fried beef with orange

    • e_ballad on January 13, 2018

A ludicrous amount of sauce - already forewarned by @dishyrishie, I halved the quantity of sauce ingredients, but I’d consider even quartering this. The soy sauce certainly dominates the flavour.

    • Dishyrishie on January 30, 2016

A favourite. Don't pour in all of the sauce at once unless you want a wet stir-fry.

  • Moroccan pasta

    • kworrad on February 11, 2022

I made this with some quality orecchiette and it was delicious! I made it exactly as per the recipe but noted that you could manage with less pine nuts. It seemed like a lot.

  • Lamb and apricot tagine

    • e_ballad on July 30, 2022

Delicious. The quantity of couscous is well off, needing to be halved if you wish to feed 4x hungry adults.

  • Roast pork with Marsala and fig jam

    • e_ballad on August 22, 2019

The Marsala & fig sauce makes this dish, though you can easily halve the quantity for the amount of meat.

  • Dulce de leche brownies

    • e_ballad on August 09, 2018

Good, but not amazing, which is a shame given the ingredients.

  • Cinnamon panna cotta with slow-roasted pears

    • treay on January 07, 2025

These pears are divine! And they are so easy to prepare... When I have the time, I serve them with vanilla, cinnamon or chocolate panna cotta, but if in a hurry, I just serve them with ice-cream. They melt in your mouth. You will need to cook them for about 3 hours though, so you must plan this recipe ahead.

  • Pork belly with caramel dressing

    • treay on January 07, 2025

This pork belly is very easy to do and it is amazingly good. The combination of the caramel sauce with the pork together with the herbs, it's just awesome!!

  • Steamed blueberry pudding

    • e_ballad on January 10, 2019

We found the texture grainy & unpleasant. Far better steamed pudding recipes elsewhere that could be easily adapted to incorporate blueberries.

  • Orange and almond cake with cranberry compote

    • treay on January 07, 2025

This cake is made without flour, making it a perfect dessert for people who are celiac. It is super easy to make and it's just beautiful.

  • Pea felafel with pita and herby yoghurt

    • Kirstin_the_Kiwi on March 22, 2015

These taste really good. However whoever decided that using a pestle and mortar to ground dried peas to a "fine powder" was a good idea needs their head read - it took me over an hour to pound just 1/2 a cup.

  • Basil, tomato and goat's cheese roulade

    • RosieB on June 26, 2014

This was great at a shared plate lunch. Really tasty and looked great. I have made this several times and each time it has been a hit.

  • Simple kedgeree

    • RosieB on December 31, 2015

I made this for New Years day brunch with some home smoked salmon and our own free range eggs.It was easy and delicious. One of the better kedgeree recipes I have made. Saved as a favourite.

  • Lamb burgers with tzatziki

    • e_ballad on November 13, 2020

Meh. Even with excellent mince with a good proportion of fat, these were tough. The tzatziki was also underwhelming.

  • Buttermilk tart with passionfruit sauce

    • e_ballad on July 16, 2017

Whilst my hubby really liked this, I found this incredibly sweet. The custard also leached fluid while baking & despite blind-baking, the base was quite soggy. If making again, I would place on a preheated tray for the baking.

    • e_ballad on July 17, 2017

Right, I have to retract my previous review. As a cold dish, this is fantastic! The passionfruit sauce is still too sweet, but the tart is very moreish.

  • Classic vanilla cheesecake

    • RosieB on June 26, 2014

This is a nice baked cheese cake. I added some dark rum for extra flavour.
