Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Chicken, barley and vegetable soup

    • e_ballad on October 23, 2016

An easy whack-it-all-into-the-pot soup that delivers on flavour. Goes a long way & freezes beautifully.

  • Warm pumpkin and goat's cheese salad

    • e_ballad on February 07, 2017

Really attractive dish that also delivered on flavour. It might sound like just another pumpkin salad recipe, but the way that the goat cheese is prepared makes this 'a bit special'.

  • Satay pork pies

    • e_ballad on June 11, 2018

Absolutely delicious & despite appearing to be fiddly, these were in the oven in 20 mins. Could easily make the filling in advance for a quick midweek meal.

  • Beef Wellington pie

    • e_ballad on February 10, 2017

Loved this. A very hearty dish in its richness, perfect for the depths of winter.

  • Chicken tagine with preserved lemon

    • e_ballad on February 11, 2017

Completely inauthentic but very tasty! A doddle to prepare for a midweek meal.

  • Slow-cooked lamb with parsley dumplings

    • e_ballad on July 27, 2017

For the investment of time & effort, it was extra-disappointing that this was such a dud. Avoid.

  • Lemon and bacon spatchcocks with bread sauce

    • e_ballad on June 18, 2018

Despite using spatchcock that we’re sure were smaller than those specified in the recipe, these were very much undercooked using the stated cooking time. We weren’t especially wowed by the end product either.

  • Spaghetti with spicy Bolognese

    • e_ballad on September 22, 2017

      Meh, nothing too exciting here.

  • Creamy bacon, leek and pea farfalle

    • e_ballad on December 17, 2017

Everything it says on the label. A very rich dish that is very easily put together to create a tasty cold weather pasta.

  • Chargrilled vegetable, mozzarella and prosciutto pasta bake

    • e_ballad on July 30, 2018

An ok way to use up excess leftover chargrilled veg (our situation!), but you shouldn’t go out of your way to make this dish otherwise. Ridiculously rich & the flavours competed in a way that was unsuccessful for us.

  • Indian spiced eggplant

    • e_ballad on February 04, 2019

A delicious side dish that would definitely pass for a vegetarian main, perhaps with some halloumi or chickpeas added for a bit of extra protein.

  • Coconut lamb curry

    • e_ballad on April 24, 2019

A reasonably mild flavoured curry that went down well with the younger members of our family. Most of these ingredients are used to create a spice blend, creating roughly double the quantity required for the dish. This is the most ‘work’ involved in this recipe & could easily be made ahead of time.

  • Easy fish tagine

    • e_ballad on July 13, 2019

Very tasty, though I’m not sure that marinating the fish enhanced the flavour of the dish, given the manner in which it’s cooked. I’d simply add those ingredients in with the canned tomatoes, which would also have the added benefit of being a very quick to prepare dish.

  • Oven-baked sausages and balsamic tomatoes

    • e_ballad on March 06, 2017

Ludicrously easy to bang out for a midweek meal. Definitely a sum of its parts, its success likely relates to the quality of your balsamic vinegar - by no means should you use an uber-expensive variety, but certainly one you'd be happy enough using in an everyday salad dressing. Also, heed the advice regarding the thin wedges of red onion - I was lazy & cut them into more chunky wedges, which were fine but still a bit crunchy for our liking.

  • Mexican polenta cobbler

    • e_ballad on July 20, 2017

A family favourite. Effectively savoury mince with cornbread topping. No frills, but devoured by all.

  • Whole baked pumpkin

    • e_ballad on March 11, 2016

Cooking time closer to 2.5 hours for our oven. Absolutely delicious.

  • Cheese and potato bake (Tartiflette)

    • e_ballad on May 31, 2020

I used the raclette variation for this recipe. It’s complete decadence: carbs, cheese, smoked pig, cream. What’s not to like!

  • Deep-dish apple, sour cream and nutmeg pie

    • e_ballad on August 17, 2016

A nice dessert, but nothing wow-worthy. I did find the sour cream was a really interesting inclusion & will probably seek out other apple pie recipes incorporating this.

  • Date and chestnut pudding

    • e_ballad on June 03, 2020

I’m finding the desserts out of this book are really super-sweet, with this recipe being no exception. It’s very good & the recipe ‘works’, but too cloying for us.

  • Lemon delicious

    • e_ballad on October 28, 2016

Soup. Cloyingly sweet soup. Cooked well beyond the cooking time, but ended up with blackened cloyingly sweet soup. Not ideal.

  • Almond croissant pudding

    • e_ballad on August 15, 2016

Very rich but so so very moreish. This would have to be one of my favourite desserts in recent times.

  • Chocolate bread and butter pudding

    • e_ballad on September 22, 2019

Really wanted to like this, but it was so very very rich. Watch it like a hawk as it runs the risk of burning quite easily.
