Notes about Recipes in this book

  • Cornbread, cranberry and orange stuffing

    • JoannaV on November 28, 2010

the cornbread part was very easy and tasty - worked great in a stuffing

  • Sweet potatoes with marshmallows

    • tarae1204 on November 28, 2021

This was a great rendition of what can be a divisive dish. I liked it! Nigella has you individually wrap sweet potatoes to roast. I made the purée in advance with 7 medium sweet potatoes (which I think was only 4 lb not the 7 called for — that’s high). The next day I warmed it up in saucepan and that helped reduce the extra liquid. We carefully spread marshmallows on the top and accidentally baked it at 450, instead of 425. We caught it just in time! 15 min? The marshmallows had melted into a shatteringly crisp layer. The lime is imperceptible but very good here.

  • Brussels sprouts with chestnuts, pancetta and parsley

    • Lsblackburn1 on November 23, 2018

This is my favorite holiday Brussels recipe! I did cut them in half since they were big. Easy and delicious.

  • Rhubarb crumble

    • ccwashashore on June 17, 2020

Excellent and super easy. Could up the amount of sugar in the rhubarb slightly say 1/3 cup. I used Turbinado (vanilla) sugar in the topping in place of the white vanilla sugar.

  • Seasonal breeze

    • anya_sf on November 21, 2022

I used regular orange juice and thought there was enough bitterness from the Campari. The flavors were good, but I preferred the drink lightened with a splash of soda.

  • The non cake-maker's Christmas cake

    • cpandrew on December 28, 2021

      Quick and delicious!

  • Lentils braised in red wine

    • mrsjencarlson on August 04, 2012

this was amazing. restaurant quality, and so easy. i used pre-cooked lentils, cut out the water and just used the wine. amazing. really good with mustard glazed fish.

  • Blakean fish pie

    • Lsblackburn1 on September 30, 2018

Super rich and delicious comfort food! Most of my liquid disappeared while poaching the fish so I added more white wine. Didn’t seem to hurt the dish! Also, this was too much for my pie dish so next time I’d use the rectangular casserole.

  • Lemon meringue cake

    • Lsblackburn1 on April 18, 2022

Love this! I was an idiot and added one cup of butter instead of one stick and it still worked ?? It looks very impressive despite being simple to make.

    • kezwell on May 28, 2020

Delicious, on nigella site. Was worried about turning out but worked.

    • aargle on May 20, 2018

This is absolutely delicious, inexpensive with ingredients that you readily have on hand. Made the lemon curd from Stephanie Alexander's Cook's Companion. Will go into my easy desserts repertoir.

    • Jane on October 17, 2013

This is one of my standby desserts. Always have all the ingredients in the house and it's a quick and easy dessert that looks and tastes like it took a lot more effort.

  • Chewy macaroons

    • PatriciaScarpin on January 20, 2012

So, so good - and easy. Very chewy on the inside - marzipany, actually - with a hint of rosewater - just heavenly.

  • Banana buttermilk pancakes

    • louie734 on March 26, 2013

These are a bit magical in that they barely taste of banana but achieve a special lightness from its inclusion.

    • louie734 on January 21, 2019

Almost had forgotten how soft and pillowy these feather-light pancakes are. A batch of batter lasted overnight in the fridge and allowed us a full weekend of breakfasts. Instead of buttermilk, I used a dollop of sour cream, then topped up with almond milk. These are magic.

  • Rhubarb muffins

    • Vand11 on January 29, 2011

Can Use 8 Grain Cereal in lieu of wheat germ.

  • Vodka-marinated steak

    • FJT on September 06, 2020

This would probably have been lovely had I not overcooked the steak. I did not like the instructions to sear it and then put the lid on, but I followed it to see what happened ... and it was truly overcooked. Next time I'll cook steak the normal way (e.g. get my husband to cook it). The flavour of the steak was good but the marinade once reduced a bit for the sauce was too salty. I really didn't enjoy my dinner which is a shame given the price of steak here.

  • One-pan sage-and-onion chicken and sausage

    • Krisb on November 21, 2010

Be sure to check doneness frequently -- the time/temp given seems to lead to overdone chicken and sausage.

  • Ritzy chicken nuggets

    • jumali on January 03, 2011

      Greasy and bland.

  • Rice and meatballs

  • Toblerone fondue

    • bching on December 31, 2015

A family favorite in the winter. Delicious with pieces of dried apricot to dunk.

  • Chocolate gingerbread

    • angrygreycat on September 30, 2018

Made this for an Autumn-y dessert. The cake is delicious and very squidgy. Comes out more like a brownie with gingerbread flavoring. Next time I would probably leave off the glaze as this is super rich and doesn't really need it.

  • Chocolate Malteser cake

    • Jane on April 09, 2018

This a regular favorite birthday cake in my family. This time the request was for a chocolate ganache coating rather than the buttercream. I made a half quantity of the buttercream as the filling.

  • Chocolate Guinness cake

    • louie734 on March 26, 2013

The most-requested cake in our house. Beautiful to look at and a batter for the truly lazy - everything is stirred in the saucepan. A moist cake that always sinks in the center, the better to fill with the extremely good, just-sweet-enough cream cheese frosting. A pleasure to look at and to eat.

    • Laurendmck on March 17, 2018

      p. 286. I've made this several times, this time without the frosting, for simplicity's sake. It's wonderful.

    • nadiam1000 on March 27, 2022

I have made this a couple of times and it never disappoints. Quite easy to pull together and the cream cheese topping is a great compliment to the deeply fudgy cake. Mine always sinks a bit but it is not under baked. It is a bit like a cake and brownie cross since it has a bit of a chewy textue and a deep rich chocolate flavor.

    • stockholm28 on January 30, 2017

Very tasty and moist chocolate cake. Mine sunk in the middle but just added extra icing in the center.

  • Muttar paneer

  • Spaghetti alle vongole

  • Lamb shanks with figs and honey

    • jzanger on February 03, 2011

This was really delicious. I halved it and ended up making a gravy with the liquid at the end. Would also be great with prunes. I added a healthy amount of salt at the end which really tied the flavors together.

  • Cornbread-topped chilli con carne

    • angrygreycat on October 03, 2022

Mixed reviews, a couple people loved it and a couple were lukewarm. I liked it but would probably tweak abit if I tried it again.

  • St. Tropez chicken

    • angrygreycat on October 07, 2018

Super easy and tasty chicken dish. The chicken comes out a beautiful bronze color. Will make again.

  • Smashed potato gratin

    • angrygreycat on October 07, 2018

Made this to go with the St. Tropez chicken from Feast as well. This was fine but nothing special, although I did like the idea of cooking the potatoes in milk rather than boiling in water and then adding milk to mash.

  • Red kidney bean dip

...her recipes, have always reiterated for me the notion that eating is an act of great respect for the dead—because self-sustainment...is an act of survival, a direct reverence to life itself.
