      This is one of my favorite recipes. It is frugal, serving 4 or 5 hungry people with a pound of ground meat, and has great depth of flavor. I use ground pork and reduce the 5 tablespoons of oil to 2 with no difficulty stir frying it. The name is fun, and depending on how hot your hot pepper paste is, the dish is good for kids.

  • Browned cabbage noodles

      This is delicious beyond belief, using the simplest of ingredients. I especially like it made with schmaltz (rendered chicken fat) but it is good with butter too. The browned cabbage has a sweetness and complexity most have never tasted. Keep this one in mind for when you want vegetarian and are working off a limited pantry, or budget.

  • Macaroni and cheese with wine

      This is a little bland. Doesn't require a Béchamel sauce so is a good simple master recipe that can be easily tweaked to give it more punch.
