Born and raised in southwest Montana. My parents came from working class poor backgrounds on opposite ends of the country (Pennsylvania and Montana). They were exposed to diverse food cultures; met and married just after WWII. Hometown in MT was a mining town, and as American mining towns tend was a diverse mix - Cornish, Irish, Italian, Croatian, Bohemian and so on.
Sundays were spent in cooking experiments, many recipes gleaned from Woman's Day, Family Circle or Life magazines. It might be Gnocchi, Scrapple, Latkes, Oxtail Stew, Pierogi or Pizza (when that wasn't a thing in Montana). Fearless cooks in a limited kitchen.
After University in Montana, I moved to Silicon Valley. I was a fearless cook for years. Work encroached. I became a dabbler.
Now retired, I'm regaining my fearless cooking ethic, and exploring new cuisines. I take cooking classes when I travel now; Italy, Mexico and Guatemala so far.
I concentrate on cooking techniques and principles more than recipes.
