  • This is a wonderful, velvety soup that I like even better than the standard green soup recipe.

  • I love the variety of bright colors and fun shapes in this, but would prefer a more assertive seasoning. On the other hand, the recipe as is would probably be perfect for children or picky eaters. I also steamed the green beans and frozen lima beans simultaneously, since they had the same steaming time and I saw no reason not to. It worked fine. Overall, this recipe is cheap, easy, and nourishing, so I'll be sure to try again with different/more seasoning.

  • Kind of dry, and I couldn't taste the anchovy at all. I don't know if this a fault of the recipe, or with my ingredients. It wasn't terrible, but I won't be doing this or any of the other Pan-Roasted Broccoli variations in this book again.

  • Made with fresh, local cream and chicken, this dish was so good that my family couldn't stop talking about it for a week.

  • These muffins have a delicate, crumbly texture, and a pleasing, minimally sweet taste. Good with butter and/or jam.

  • A great collection of reliable recipes that are completely attainable for almost any home cook. If I'm making a dish for the first time, I see if it's in this book first.

  • A wonderfully comprehensive collection of bread recipes, with each recipe scaled for both home and bakery use. The Vermont Sourdough is my default bread recipe.

  • A collection of decadent vegetarian recipes that I grew up eating (my mother was vegetarian for many years). I still crave some of the recipes in this book whenever I need comfort food. The baked macaroni and cheese that calls for Fontina is excellent, and the Dal is a staple of cheap but tasty student living.

  • The Caramelized Cabbage Soup is amazing, as are many of the other recipes.

  • A great no-frills baking book. The recipes were well-tested, and are absolutely reliable. I was devastated to hear that this book was out of print, but my Mom gave me her old copy for my birthday, and I treasure it.
