Keeping track of recipes I rated/reviewed   Go to last post Go to last unread

It seems that there is no way to keep track of recipes I have rated in the past, but may not of bookmarked as a favorite. So say I make a dish, and rate it only two stars. It's certainly not going into my favorites folder. When that recipe comes up again in a search, and I see the star rating, it is just the average rating, and not my rating. It would be great if in addition to the average, I saw that I had rated it, and what that rating was. If it is months later, I may not even remember that I had already rated the recipe.

I suppose I could create a "rated" category in my bookmarks, and put the recipes in there when I rate them even if they aren't favorites, but it seems cumbersome, and I still wouldn't see what my rating was, if others had also rated the recipe.

I created a category "tried" and I just add recipes there that I tried but most likely won't make again. The category "favorite recipes" I use for recipes I'll make again. They might not be technically "favorite" but utilizing 2 categories is all I need for efficiency. I do star all recipes according to my opinion.

Similarly MelMM, I created a "Don't Repeat" bookmark category to address this but to your point, this still doesn't address your question about finding a way to see your own star ratings.

You can see your own star rating by putting your mouse over the stars and a pop up says "Your rating is x".

In addition to that would you want a record of all your ratings and comments that you could refer to?  That is something we are considering for the revamp of My EYB that we are working on.

I think that would be terrific Jane! I used to write my recipe reviews directly in my cookbooks and now I don't bother, I just make an EYB notation so I know to check here for my review. I think this would be especially helpful if we wanted to suggest recipes to other EYB members as well we'd know what we rated them and if we had any suggestions/concerns related to the ingredients or method. A great idea!!

Thanks for the tip, Jane, I had not noticed that pop-up box before.

I think having a list of all my rated and reviewed recipes would be great. Actually, I'd also like to be able to click on another member's username and see their ratings and reviews as well. Like on Amazon, where you can click on the reviewer's name and see all their past reviews. Then you can get an idea of how similar the person's taste is to yours, and it helps you decide how much weight to give to their review when deciding whether or not to make the recipe.

I used to use Epicurious.com, right up until I found out about EYB. EYB is a dream come true. But one feature of Epicurious that I loved was that for every recipe you could read everyone's comments and ratings. I learned so much by reading how other cooks adapted recipes.

I have recently joined this site as a new member, and the functionality offered by EYB is fantastic - I can do almost everything with ease which I previously had to do on my own amateurish spreadsheets. I'm also impressed with the attractive, but straight-forward layout.

The additional feature which I would most like to see is my own star ratings for recipes. I would personally find this most useful if recipes were laid out showing the average rating based on all 'votes', with 'My Rating' directly underneath it. If I have given a dish a low score, but I can see that the average rating is higher, I can then decide whether this is down to my own personal taste, or whether I want to re-try it and hopefully make a better job of it second time around.

Also - I understand that you have lots of additions and improvements ongoing, but the indexing of more U.K. books would be greatly appreciated.

A new EYB fan!

Hi Sue21 and welcome to EYB.  We haven't actually launched the website in the UK yet (probably April) but we will be indexing a lot more British and Irish books in the next few months in anticipation of the launch.  Looking at your Bookshelf, I think you will see a lot more of your books indexed soon.  And once we launch in the UK and get more British members then their books will make it into our indexing chart, which is based on the number of Bookshelves plus the number of index requests.

Hi Jane,

Great news about the upcoming U.K. launch. I look forward to seeing more U.K. books indexed going forwards - and in fact I see that you have just indexed 'River Cottage Everyday' which I intend to purchase at some point in the future.

Thanks for the information, and Good Luck with the launch.

Sue
