Books not in EYB   Go to last post Go to last unread

I am in the process of cataloging my cookbooks - 50 so far and tons more to go!

I do have a few that are not in the EYB library. I know the ISBN numbers but I haven't a clue how to get these books in as I know nothing about LibraryThings, etc.

Is there a way I can add these books?

Welcome to EYB Judy

You can request that a book is added by importing the ISBN using the Import Books feature.  There is an explanation of this in FAQ, About Cookbooks, "How can I get a book added to the EYB Library?".  We have just recently added Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk as affiliates so we are currently in the process of adding all the books that members have requested since we added this feature.  Unfortunately we have quite a bit of pruning to do as some members imported all their books, rather than just food and drink books as we request.

Once we have cleared the backlog we will be adding newly requested books on a daily basis.

Ok and thanks. I guess I will have to check out using LibraryThings or some such. Just listing the ISBN Numbers in the Import Books area doesn't do it.

So Far I have catalogued over 130 books with more to go elsewhere - not to mention the ones not listed!!!

Love, love, the site!

Actually, listing the ISBN numbers in the Import Books area WILL do the trick eventually! EYB saves the ISBN numbers of books that you enter but aren't currently in the library. As more books are added to the library, the books will show up on your bookshelf. Hopefully with the addition of books from Amazon just about every book in the stored section will be added to the library and our bookshelves!

I ended up going to LibraryThing and found almost all the books and was able to import all but three or four.

You really have a great site! I still have to catalogue my books at our beach house - but (fortunately) a lot of those are duplicates so it shouldn't take too long - and then I can have fun playing with more recipes! I have 167 books on my self - so far!

I heard about you on an Internet Cooking Group I help head - and am so glad someone found you!

I have the entire series of the Time-Life Good Cook Series which I've unable to add - EYB doesn't recognize the ISBN numbers.  I keep returning every couple of months to see if that's changed, but so far - no luck.

This is a venerable series/collection which I've had for years and continue to reference and cook from.  I'm quite surprised that it isn't part of EYB's library.

Are there plans to add them?

We are very close to getting the extra books - as always with software development it takes longer than we ever think it's going to.

Foodelf - there are 20 Good Cook books listed in the EYB Library - you've added 4 of those so far.   I think there were 28 in the series, so we're obviously missing some.  Have you done a search using "good cook" "time life"?   It seems strange that it's not recognizing your ISBNs numbers though, as I don't think they issued more than one edition.  Can you let me know some of the ISBNs you were using and I'll look into it - you can mail me at [email protected] if you want.

For anyone interested in this series there's a long thread on Chowhound about them - started in 2006 and still going!

judyg - great to hear you're getting your Bookshelf sorted.  Once you've added your beach house books don't forget to tag them with a Bookmark so when you're there you can just search for recipes in your beach house books.  I know from experience how annoying it is to find the perfect recipe and then realise the book's in the other place.  Though an internet search for the recipe has sometimes been the solution!

Took a bit of sorting out, but all the Time Life Good Cook series now have the correct title and where there are 2 or 3 editions they are now all linked.   See them all here.   I only have 26 titles though, and I believe there were 28 in the series.  If anyone can tell me what the other 2 were I'll get them added.

Thanks for your help on this one foodelf.

Fiona - this is fantastic!  It certainly makes my searches a lot more comprehensive.  One of the missing titles is Soup and the other is Outdoor Cooking.

I'll go through my collection and ensure that we've covered them all.

Thank you so much!

I'm so jealous of all of you with complete sets! My mom used to have a huge assortment of the Good Cook series, I still remember them from childhood. But not realizing how great they still are, she got rid of them when my parents moved houses. One of these days I'll start at the beginning and put the collection back together. Thanks for the link to the Chowhound thread!

ae.bell - you might try looking in second hand bookstores; I've definitely seen both part and whole sets in at least 2 separate stores in Vancouver, Canada. If you have any good stores in your area, you may wish to consider asking them to alert you if they get any.

I acquired mine through mail order when they were first launched on the market and it took me 2 years to complete the set; I wish I could remember how much they cost.

It's really worth have them - such a terrific resource for techniques, facts, advice and - of course - recipes!

I'll definitely keep my eyes out, Foodelf, you've inspired me! I should set my mom on the hunt since she's great at such things and it would perhaps assuage some of the guilt of getting rid of all of hers ;-)

I have a lot of the Good Cook book also- and found the ISBN numbers at LibraryThing - and they posted into my bookshelf.

Fiona, thanks - Ive been using bookmarks for my two locations. Is there a way of searching for books on your shelf that are NOT bookmarked? Sometimes I've adding about 20 or more books and then have to go back and bookmark them. The only way I've been able to figure out how to do this is to go through all the books or type in the name of a book. Is there any shortcut for searching for non-bookmarked books, she asks hopefully.
