I am baking for an event at my work place next week.  People wil be bidding for cakes we have made. Usually I am good at making cakes that taste good but my skills at icing are not so good.  Can you suggest any ways to make my cake look appealing without fancy piped on icing?  Am planning to make a heart shaped chocolate cake but am open to ideas.

A pour-on glaze such as a chocolate ganache or a mirror glaze can look very impressive and no piping is required.

I'm by no means an expert but I often think that fresh fruit looks surprisingly effective. Maybe raspberries cherries or orange slices with chocolate? Some of the "naked cake" styles also *look* relatively straightforward if you have a Google. Good luck!

Yes, additionally fruits on cakes make people feel less guilty on eating the cake so they may bid more :) Personally I don't like the heavy icing option.

The chocolate pour in one is also a good idea, but I think an even better idea is chocolate pour in with fruits on top!

Zests on top of chocolate would also work well.

For some kinds of cakes -- specifically, rich or dense single-layer ones that don't need icing -- an elegant decoration can be a dusting of confectioner's sugar (or cocoa, or tinted sugar, etc.). Stencils for the purpose are sold, but it's easy enough to make a simple pattern with stiff paper or cardboard. You can rehearse dusting onto wax paper or the like, using a strainer or shaker.
